Methu Breaks Silence on How He Was Approached for Ruto’s 2027 Running Mate Slot with a KSh 10 Million Weekly Offer
Nyandarua Senator John Methu has let the cat out of the bag about a rather shady approach he claims he was made early last year – supposedly by some government big shot who wanted to tell him to put himself up for a potential running mate spot for President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
Methu told a local radio station that the whole thing started right after the the Democracy for the Citizens Party candidate did surprisingly well in that Ol Kalou by-election on the 16th of July 2026. Apparently he was invited for a cup of coffee by a mate in government who claimed he had a message for the senator from one of their number.
He says the conversation quickly turned to Methu’s future in politics – and the government big shot allegedly suggested that he could be a key player up in Mount Kenya politics and that he should start angling for a senior role in Ruto’s team.
John Methu Reveals Approach Over Ruto’s Running Mate Slot
Methu said the government big shot came to him right after that Ol Kalou by-election, which seems to have suddenly made him a bit of a player again in the eyes of the powers that be.
The official apparently reckoned he had the chance to build up his influence in the Mount Kenya region and maybe even put himself in the frame to be Ruto’s running mate in 2027 – which would be a pretty big deal.
Methu says the proposal was pitched to him as some kind of career advancement – but one that would require him to start building up his own party and establishing himself as his own man politically.
The thing is, though – the senator says he wasn’t really on the prowl for a higher office and so he was pretty taken aback by the whole approach.
What Methu Was Told About Rigathi Gachagua
Methu claimed that a group of people told him a pretty compelling argument – that because of a court case, the former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua might not be in the running for the 2027 General Election. They seemed to think that if that were the case, it could create a bit of an opportunity for another leader to gain some traction in the Mount Kenya region.
“Apparently they thought he had a case in court and so he couldn’t contest” Methu remembered being told.
He also claims that these same people told him that by staying in Gachagua’s party, he was basically limiting himself and stopping himself from being able to grow and have enough influence to get himself a better deal in the future.
Needless to say, these claims are just Methu’s version of what went down in the alleged conversation – they don’t say anything about whether or not Gachagua would actually be out of the running in 2027.
KSh 10 Million Weekly Offer to Support Methu’s Party
Methu also claims that the people who approached him were keen to help him start up a new political party and fund its activities.
Apparently the deal they put on the table was some initial funding and then a weekly payment of KSh 10 million to keep the party’s wheels turning. They were also apparently ready to lend a hand with getting some good candidates on board and getting the campaign materials sorted.
To be honest, Methu’s account makes it sound like the proposed party would be pretending to be the opposition – with government types pretending to be all against it but actually quietly helping it along.
Again, Methu didn’t exactly say he was tempted to go for it – more like the people trying to persuade him were trying to get him to take a different path ahead of the next election.
How the Alleged Plan Would Position Methu in 2027
According to Methu, the idea floated by these people involved creating a vehicle for him to operate as a free agent, while Gachagua went about his opposition work.
He claims that what they proposed was pitched as a wild card plan that could potentially boil down to a deal with Ruto’s team further down the road.
Methu also said that he was told that if this plan flew, he and Gachagua could start moving towards each other towards the end of the election season & that could open the door for him to become Ruto’s running mate in 2027.
So the plan wasn’t just about forming a new party, as Methu described it, it was much more of a strategy to boost his own influence before linking up with the President’s camp.
Nothing’s been independently verified about these claims, of course.
Why John Methu Says He Rejected the Proposal
Methu said he was left stunned by the offer that was made to him and really struggled to put his faith in the people who were approaching him.
The Nyandarua senator insisted that all along he’d never had any interest in becoming a party leader, nor was he after the deputy presidential slot in 2027.
Instead, he said his top priority was holding onto his Senate seat & defending it in the next General Election.
Methu later went on to clue Gachagua in on what had supposedly been proposed – the financial enticements & the proposed deal they’d been talking about.
It looks like Methu decided to just keep on with what he was doing, rather than chasing after the opportunity that was put in front of him.
What the Alleged Approach Means for Mount Kenya Politics
Methu’s story throws another interesting twist into the mix in the lead-up to the 2027 General Election, specifically when it comes to the Mount Kenya region.
This is still a key battleground, with all the major players trying to rally their supporters & the influencers, building alliances that could give them an upper hand in the presidential contest.
But at the same time, Methu’s account raises questions about how politicians might go about enticing big players like himself, launching new parties and really gaining traction ahead of an election.
That being said, the details about alleged funding offers, proposed deals & the possible deputy presidential spot are strictly according to Methu’s account of what went down. Anything more would come straight from the horses’ mouths – if they ever come forward.
For the moment, though, Methu says his focus remains on holding onto his Senate seat in Nyandarua, rather than going after that deputy presidential spot.
