Raila’s Bodyguard Maurice Ogeta Reveals Chilling Details of Alleged Assassination Attempts
Raila Odinga’s long time personal bodyguard, Maurice Ogetta, has finally opened up about the years he spent working hand and glove with the former Prime Minister . In an interview with Citizen TV Ogetta let loose about his experiences with Raila, recalling some pretty scary moments the two shared and of course the really tough final moments they had to go through together.
In the interview, Ogetta painted a picture of life alongside Raila, who to him wasn’t just a boss, he was like a father, a brother, a good mate and somebody he could call upon for guidance and advice.
Ogetta brought up a rather harrowing incident where gunfire was directed at Railas vehicle, a moment that brought a ton of fear and uncertainty into the lives of those around him.
Maurice Ogeta Recalls Alleged Assassination Attempts on Raila
He went on to tell a story about an incident where the vehicle came under attack. Ogetta described the kind of fear that clutched at everyone’s hearts as it all went down.
Ogetta also remembered seeing a guy in an uniform walk up to the windscreen of raila’s car and start cracking it with the butt of his gun. The car then took a bunch of shots.
“It got to a stage where in my mind I knew I was looking at a dead man and it was like we were all dead too.” he said
There was a video that went all around showing a bloke with a gun approaching the windscreen of Raila’s car and that windscreen had been hit so many times that it just about gave in then cracked and at that point shots were just flying all over that car.
He said that was a moment when he really did fear for the safety of the man he was supposed to be protecting.
Ogetta relates that story as part of a whole load of other recollections about the dangers he says he encountered while serving as Raila’s bodyguard – so these alleged assassination attempts have to be taken with a grain of salt, they’re just his side of the story.
Bodyguard Recalls Moment He Feared Raila Had Been Killed
Ogeta also remembered the look on the faces of his fellow security team members during that terrifying incident.
He recalled that their commander, who was sitting up front in the lead car, made a rather chilling comment suggesting that Raila had been done in.
“Yeah, I still remember what the bloke said, our commander on that particular day, who was stuck in the lead vehicle, basically saying ‘These lot have taken out Mzee’ and I reckon it’s a taste of the fear that Ogeta says the security team felt while trying to keep Raila safe.
Maurice Ogeta Narrates Raila Odinga’s Emotional Final Moments
In the next bit of the interview that really got to me, Ogeta recalls the very last moments he shared with Raila.
He describes watching the former Prime Minister walk a little way and then suddenly stop, looking dazed and making this awful sound that Ogeta thought was him in pain either in the back or leg.
“Raila had just taken a couple of steps, moving pretty slowly and then he just stopped dead in his tracks. I was right by his side, about a metre away – and he just said ‘Eih’ or something like that. When he made that noise I was like ‘Mzee, is your back giving you grief or is it your leg?’ He just sort of stood there, looking really out of it, like he was staring at something that was just out of his line of sight…like he was in a dream or something.”
Ogeta then said he offered to walk Raila over to this chair that was standing nearby so he could take a gander at what was causing him so much distress.
“Then he made that noise again, ‘Eih’…and he just stood there, and then I said ‘No, I’ll take him over to the chair so I can take a look, okay?’”
The whole thing really captures the horror that Ogeta felt as he was confronted with a moment that he’ll be remembering for the rest of his life.
Raila Odinga Was More Than a Boss to Maurice Ogeta
Ogeta also talks openly about the personal bond he shared with the former Prime Minister.
For Ogeta, Raila was like a dad, a mate, a brother, a whole bunch of things. It’s clear that their relationship went way beyond just the security role.
Having been with Raila for years, Ogeta’s memories give us a really personal glimpse into what the man was really like, not just the public face but the person behind the politician.
And it also gets people talking again about the experiences of the security teams that stuck with him throughout his life as a politician.
