Mosiria Takes Aim at Nairobi Governor Seat, Promises to Finish Kidero and Sonko’s Work
Nairobi County Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria has officially told everyone he’s going to be running for Nairobi governor in the 2027 General Election – promising to completely turn things around in the capital under his ‘Mr Fix-it’ leadership plan.
Mosiria made his announcement on Sunday when Jubilee Party bigwigs came to visit Bishop Margaret Wanjiru’s Jesus Is Alive Ministries Church in Nairobi. While he was there he hinted that he might want Wanjiru to be his running mate which got some people thinking he might be looking to team up with her in the gubernatorial race to succeed Governor Johnson Sakaja.
Mosiria Proposes Margaret Wanjiru as His Deputy
While chatting to the congregation at the church Mosiria seemed to be pretty serious about possibly teaming up with Wanjiru – or at least he’s getting his message out to the key supporters he needs to get on board before the 2027 General Election.
“ If you want a change in Nairobi, its Mosiria who will bring that change. He’s going to fix Nairobi. I want to be governor, with mama Wanjiru as my deputy. Let’s move forward, mama!” Mosiria said.
His comments made it seem like he’s trying to tie up an alliance with Wanjiru to help strengthen his base of support before he starts running for office though it wasnt clear if they had sort of sealed a deal on a joint ticket yet.
Mosiria Promises to Fix Nairobi
The Nairobi County chief officer wholeheartedly adopted the “Mr Fix-it” label , saying his time in government has pretty much prepared him for leading the capital.
He went on to say that he sees himself in a similar vein to Jubilee Party big wig Fred Matiang’i – who had real success turning around education and interior ministries. Mosiria was crediting Matiang’i for that, you see.
“So you want your own Mr Fix-it? Like Matiang’i who sorted out education and Interior? Well Ill fix Nairobi, and with mama Wanjiru behind me, we’ll take the journey together” , he said.
Mosiria wants voters to believe in his ability to turn Nairobi around and improve services for the county – which is a big part of what his campaign is all about.
Mosiria Vows to Implement Kidero and Sonko Manifestos
Mosiria is promising to pick up where former Nairobi governors Evans Kidero and Mike Sonko left off in terms of development plans. He reckons their administrations didn’t manage to fully put their manifestos into action – and he’s saying he’ll be the one to finally get the job done.
He wants to finish what was started by the previous county administrations, rather than come in with an entirely new development plan of his own. “I’m here to implement the 3 manifestos. I’m not going to be just another politician with a nice sounding manifesto that never gets off the ground… Kidero had a good manifesto, but he didn’t get the chance to see it through. Sonko had a good manifesto too, but he ran out of time to get it implemented. I’m going to see those manifestos through to the end,” he said.
Mosiria was also talking up his working relationship with Sakaja, saying his experience within the administration would be a big help in getting existing development plans up and running. “I’ve got a good working relationship with Sakaja, and I think that’s going to be a huge asset in getting things done around here. I mean, people aren’t going to see me as some new face who comes in and then suddenly promises the earth – I’m part of the team already, and I’m going to use that to our advantage.”
That was Mosiria presenting his bid for governor as a chance to build on the existing county plans – and using his experience in the administration to make sure things keep moving forward.
Mosiria Defends His Record in Nairobi County
Mosiria is using his time in various roles within the Nairobi County government as evidence that he’s got what it takes to be governor. He’s got a background in public health – and then he was the Chief Officer for Health Facilities, dealing with all sorts of challenges that come up when you’re trying to deliver a service.
He ended up getting moved to the Environment department, where he focused on getting the garbage collected. And then in 2025 he got moved to the Customer Service and Citizen Engagement docket, where he ended up intervening in cases involving some of the city’s most vulnerable residents – women and kids. He says that experience taught him all about what ordinary people are going through in Nairobi.
He reckons that by working in three different areas of the county government, he’s picked up some real world experience that’s going to serve him well as governor.
Mosiria Warns Against Gangs and Cartels in Nairobi
Mosiria has also got some concerns about criminal gangs and cartels – and to be honest, he thinks Nairobi’s leaders need to be able to take on the challenge of dealing with them.
“Look we cant just let the city get run by a bunch of thugs. This is Nairobi we’re talking about – its too important a place to leave in the hands of gangsters and cartels,” he said.
All that was part of the bigger argument that, with his experience in county government, he would be in a much stronger position to deal with all the problems facing the city.
But now his campaign is going to have to answer some pretty tough questions about how he’d actually put all this into practice if he gets elected as governor.
Geoffrey Mosiria’s Photo With Matiang’i Fuels Political Speculation
Mosiria’s plans to stand for governor had already been making headlines before he made his announcement at Wanjiru’s church.
Over the weekend he posted up a photo of himself with Fred Matiang’i, the man in charge of the Jubilee Party, adding a caption that has now sparked speculation about whether or not he’s trying to get Matiang’i on side for his campaign.
“We all have our own dads and before we take on any big journey we need to ask our dads for permission”, he wrote in the caption – which set tongues wagging about whether or not he was trying to butter Matiang’i up in the run up to the governorship elections.
The fact that Matiang’i was even at the church service where Mosiria made his announcement has only added fuel to the fire of speculation – though to be honest, the photo and a few words from Mosiria don’t entirely confirm that they’ve got some kind of formal agreement in place
Who is Geoffrey Mosiria?
Geoffrey Mosiria is a county official for Nairobi who’s had his fair share of roles – in health, environment and citizen engagement to name a few.
He really started to gain a public following while working on delivering county services – especially the kind that directly impact everyday residents; we’re talking public health, trash collection and the kinds of grumbles they have to put up with.
Then in August 2024 he gets shifted over to the Environment department – and six months later in November 2025 he’s reassigned to dealing with Citizen Engagement and Customer Service.
Back in October Mosiria mentioned that he was thinking of running for Nairobi governor, saying the idea had come to him after a chat with Mike Sonko – the old Nairobi Governor. His saying this puts him right in line with all the other politicians thinking about taking over from Sakaja in the 2027 General Election.
Who Are the Nairobi Governor Candidates in 2027?
Mosiria is part of a growing pool of folk being mentioned as possible runners in the Nairobi gubernatorial race.
People being mentioned include:
- Geoffrey Mosiria – county chief officer who wants the vote with a “can fix anything” pitch.
- Johnson Sakaja – the current governor – but it’s his plans for the future that will really make the competition hot.
- Babu Owino – an MP from Embakasi East and a potential candidate.
- James Gakuya – another MP – this time from Embakasi North.
- Agnes Kagure – a businesswoman with a shot at becoming governor.
Of course this is all subject to change as parties start picking their candidates, alliances get formed and people start announcing their campaigns in earnest.
Mosiria’s idea of teaming up with Margaret Wanjiru could be a big part of his strategy – if they can actually convince everyone it’s going to happen.
