Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu has been handed an additional 13-year prison sentence over the Sh588.7 million Kiambu roads tender scandal, while his wife, Susan Wangari, has been fined Sh22 million in the money-laundering case.

However, Waititu will not serve the latest 13-year sentence after his existing 12-year prison term. Milimani Anti-Corruption Chief Magistrate Harrison Barasa directed that the new sentences run concurrently with the sentence imposed in February 2025.

Waititu Gets 13-Year Sentence Over Sh588.7 Million Tender

On Monday, November 2, Magistrate Barasa sentenced Waititu to five years in prison on Count 10, four years on Count 11 and another four years on Count 12.

The court also imposed fines totalling Sh21 million, with alternative prison terms in default of payment.

In his ruling, Barasa ordered Waititu to pay a Sh10 million fine on Count 10, with an alternative five-year prison term if he fails to pay.

The sentences followed directions issued by the High Court in its October 14, 2026 ruling.

Despite the additional 13 years, Waititu will continue serving his existing 12-year sentence because the court ordered the latest prison terms to run concurrently.

Waititu’s Wife Susan Wangari Fined Sh22 Million

Waititu’s wife, Susan Wangari, was also sentenced on three money-laundering counts linked to the Kiambu roads tender.

The court imposed the following penalties:

  • Count 10: Sh12 million fine.
  • Count 11: Two years in prison or a Sh2 million fine.
  • Count 12: Sh8 million fine.

Her total fines amount to Sh22 million.

The penalties came after the High Court overturned the couple’s earlier acquittals on money-laundering charges while upholding convictions arising from the corruption case.

How the Sh588.7 Million Kiambu Roads Tender Case Started

The case revolves around a Sh588.7 million contract awarded to Testimony Enterprises Limited for road improvement works in Kiambu County during the 2017/2018 financial year.

At the time, Waititu was serving as Kiambu governor.

Prosecutors linked the accused persons to alleged procurement irregularities and the handling of money connected to the county government contract.

Before Monday’s sentencing, state prosecutor Vincent Monda had asked the court to impose six years in prison on each count against Waititu and Wangari.

The defence, however, challenged aspects of the sentencing process, including whether the accused should be sentenced individually or in their corporate capacity.

High Court Overturned Waititu’s Earlier Acquittal

On October 14, 2026, High Court Judge Rose Ougo overturned the trial court’s acquittals on money-laundering charges while upholding convictions on other corruption-related offences.

The decision returned the case to the magistrate’s court for mitigation and sentencing.

The High Court also revoked the couple’s bail and bond terms, resulting in their return to custody.

Waititu had previously received a 12-year prison sentence, with an option of paying a fine, following his conviction in February 2025.

The November 2 ruling therefore settled the penalties arising from the additional money-laundering counts, with the court directing that the prison sentences run concurrently.
