20 Dead in 24 Hours: Kenya Wakes Up to Horror After Series of Road Crashes

It was a weekend that left a deep scar on Kenya after 20 people lost their lives in separate road accidents all within 24 hours, but one thought kept coming back to haunt people – the worst of it all happened along that notorious highway running from Nairobi to Mombasa.

The worst crash happened at Salama , where 17 members of St. Mathias Mulumba Catholic Church in Mikindani, Mombasa were on their way to Subukia in Nakuru for the National Prayer Day when their journey was brutally cut short and they lost their lives.

That one accident was followed by a string of other fatal crashes in Kithimani, Kuresoi North and along the Mau Summit Road to further highlight the worrying state of road safety in the country.

17 Catholic Faithful Killed in Salama Accident

Heartbreak and tears gripped the mortuary of Sultan Hamud Sub-County Hospital in Makueni as families started showing up to collect the bodies of their loved ones killed in that Salama accident.

The 17 victims were all members of St. Mathias Mulumba Catholic Church in Mikindani, Mombasa – people on a pilgrimage to Subukia in Nakuru for the National Prayer Day when their lives were cruelly cut short by a devastating crash along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

The incident left families and those within the Catholic community reeling in shock – still coming to terms with the sudden loss of their loved ones.

Families Gather at Sultan Hamud Mortuary

The relatives of the victims started trickling into the Sultan Hamud mortuary early that Sunday morning as everyone waited for the postmortem exercise to be completed so they could get on with the business of laying their loved ones to rest.

The families remained at the facility all morning while authorities carried out the procedures that had to be done before the bodies could be released for burial – adding to the anguish that they were all already feeling as they came to terms with their loss.

That one crash accounted for the bulk of the 20 road accident deaths that were recorded within those 24 hours.

Another Catholic Faithful Dies in Kithimani Crash

A few hours earlier, another woman had lost her life in a separate accident at Kithimani in Machakos County along the Garissa Road on that Saturday night.

She was just one of the many Catholic faithful who were in a 14-seater matatu at the time of the accident – all on their way back to Masinga after attending prayers at the shrine in Subukia, Nakuru.

That second crash was yet another gruesome reminder of the dangers on Kenyan roads that fateful weekend.

Boda Boda Rider Dies in Kuresoi North

In Kuresoi North, there was yet another tragedy on Saturday night – a motorcycle swerved head-on into an oncoming vehicle with devastating results.

A boda boda rider lost his life in the car smash. It was a pretty nasty collision.

It wasnt the only one either – we’ve had several other crashes reported over the same period, and it’s a worrying trend when it comes to road fatalities.

Driver Killed in Mau Summit Road Accident

Another fatal smash went down on the Mau Summit Road.

A private ride with three passengers inside was clipped from behind while the driver was stopping to fill up at a petrol station.

The thing is, the second vehicle was travelling way too fast when it hit them.

The driver of the speeding vehicle didnt make it, while the three passengers in the other car got injured – they had to be rushed to hospital to get treatment.

Kenya Road Accident Deaths Raise Fresh Alarm

These four crashes in all went on to claim a total of 20 lives in just 24 hours.

We’re talking about the Salama tragedy and three other crashes in Kithimani, Kuresoi North and along the Mau Summit Road – all in all, a pretty sobering total.

The awful truth is that families all across the country are now grieving for loved ones who set out on ordinary journeys – only to meet with tragedy on the roads.

And to make matters worse, there was at least one family travelling to Subukia to pray, only to see their weekend journey end in one of the weekend’s most horrific road accidents.
