Matiang’i Issues Warning to Opposition Leaders Ahead of 2027 Elections

Former Cabinet Secretary for the Interior, Fred Matiang’i has a warning for the opposition: after the 2027 elections, even if they succeed in toppling President William Ruto, things could get nasty, opposition leaders could turn against each other.

Matiang’i is worried that a new government formed through a coalition, without proper agreements on how things are going to run, would be a recipe for disaster, leading to all sorts of problems on the home front.

The Jubilee Party’s presidential candidate is telling the opposition to think twice about throwing all their energy into defeating Ruto without actually coming up with a plan on how they’ll work together if they get into power.

Matiang’i Warns Opposition Against Repeating Past Mistakes

Matiang’i thinks opposition parties need to take a deep breath and get their act together before they even think about forming a coalition government. He says, “Thanks to God’s mercy and patience, we can form a government that’s got people who actually get along with each other, who’ve actually had some experience of governing and who are capable of working together.”

He warns, a coalition without a plan for how to actually make it work would be little more than a recipe for chaos.

“What’s the point of winning an election at any cost if you’re just going to create more problems?” he asks.

Matiang’i reckons its far better to get things sorted out in advance of an election, rather than waiting until you’re in power and then trying to sort things out.

Matiang’i Cites Uhuru-Ruto Fallout

Matiang’i uses the example of how things went sour between Uhuru Kenyatta and Ruto during their second term as President and Deputy President, as an example of how things can go wrong if opposition leaders don’t think things through.

When they first got in power things were working pretty well between them, but as the 2022 election approached, tensions began to rise.

Matiang’i is saying that opposition leaders should be under no illusions, even if they manage to form an alliance to win an election, its no guarantee they’ll all get along once they’re in power unless they all agree on what they’re trying to achieve and what they want to get out of it.

Matiang’i Reflects on Ruto-Gachagua Fallout

Matiang’i also touched on the souring of the partnership between Ruto and his former right-hand man deputy Rigathi Gachagua.

It all fell apart after Gachagua was booted from office back in October 2024, following months of very public rows between the two leaders.

This fallout is just another case of the kinds of headaches that can crop up within a government forged from a joint electoral campaign.

Matiang’i’s words of warning are that opposition leaders had better take note of this kind of thing as they start negotiating possible deals in the lead-up to the 2027 elections.

Opposition Power-Sharing Talks Remain Unresolved

Matiang’i revealed that the opposition parties are still trying to figure out how they’d divvy up the top jobs if they were to form a government together.

He urged the opposition leaders to take care of any potential squabbles before they even think about signing on the dotted line for any coalition arrangement.

“Lets keep our minds on this and avoid getting caught up in the kind of problems that came up when we first started talking about putting together a multi-party government,” he cautioned.

Matiang’i confirmed that Jubilee will keep on talking to the other opposition parties as the negotiations continue.

“Things are still on the table and we’ll just keep on talking like Jubilee and the others,” he said.

However the opposition parties are still struggling to come to a deal on who gets what elective position, which is making it pretty clear that they’ve got a long way to go on this one.

All of which means that when it comes to the distribution of power, leadership roles and how they’ll handle any disagreements that come up, there are a lot of unanswered questions still out there.

Can Opposition Leaders Maintain Unity After the 2027 Elections?

Matiang’i’s warning is a timely reminder that winning an election is all well and good, but keeping it together afterwards is pretty key.

Lots of parties will be forming coalitions with a shared goal but different ideas about who should be in charge, how to make the top appointments and where to take policy.

If they don’t get some clear agreements in place beforehand, and I mean actually written down, then all of these differences can turn into major points of contention.

For Matiang’i the key is for the opposition leaders to get together, hammer out some kind of understanding and work out a system that actually works before they get to the polls in 2027.

Jubilee’s still out there talking to the other parties as part of the ongoing discussions about forming a coalition ahead of the next general election.

Whether the parties can actually agree on what a common framework would look like is something that remains to be seen as the negotiations drag on.
