Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has said he will relocate to the United States if President William Ruto wins a second term in the 2027 General Election, revealing that he already owns a house in the country.
The former deputy president made the remarks during an interview with Inooro TV on Sunday, November 1, where he discussed the political situation in the Mount Kenya region and the opposition’s preparations for the next general election.
Gachagua suggested that Ruto’s re-election would expose opposition leaders to political difficulties, adding that he would leave Kenya rather than remain in the country under such circumstances.
Gachagua Reveals Plans to Move to America if Ruto Wins
During the interview, Gachagua said he believed Ruto’s political strategy involved dividing the Mount Kenya region to weaken its opposition to the government.
He argued that maintaining unity among voters from the region would be necessary to challenge the president in the 2027 election.
The DCP leader said he would know that Ruto was heading for re-election if divisions emerged within the region.
He then disclosed that he had a home in the United States where he could relocate if the president secured another term.
“Ruto will try to use our people to split the region, and if I see that happening, I know that Ruto will be re-elected. And if he is re-elected, we will be in trouble, but I won’t be here. I will be in America. I have a house there,” Gachagua said.
Gachagua Calls for Mount Kenya Unity Ahead of 2027 Election
Gachagua also urged leaders and residents from the Mount Kenya region to remain united, arguing that political divisions could weaken the opposition’s efforts to challenge Ruto.
He maintained that a united regional voting bloc would give the opposition an opportunity to defeat the incumbent in the next general election.
The former deputy president warned that if the region failed to maintain a common political position, Ruto could benefit from the divisions and secure another term.
“We cannot allow the Mt Kenya Region to be divided. I know we will defeat Ruto if we unite as the region, but if we don’t, Ruto will be re-elected, and if that happens, I will board a plane and go to the U.S. I have a home there,” he added.
Gachagua has been using his Democracy for the Citizens Party to organise political opposition to Ruto, with Mount Kenya remaining a central focus of his political mobilisation.
His latest remarks place regional unity and opposition cooperation at the centre of his political message ahead of the 2027 elections.
