Tanzania Horror Crash: 28 Dead as Passenger Bus Bursts Into Flames
At least 28 people were killed in a completely devastating bus-truck smashup in Morogoro, eastern Tanzania, after a passenger bus & a timber truck just ran head on into each other, causing an inferno that left nothing of the bus but a smoldering wreck
The accident unfolded on a friday, and it turned out 27 people on the bus, plus a truck driver, were killed, according to the head of the Morogoro Regional Fire and Rescue Force, Joseph Mwasabeja.
Emergency teams were still scrambling to figure out just how many were hurt when they went to the scene, even as authorities kept poking around trying to piece together what happened in that fateful crash.
Tanzania Bus-Truck Collision Claims 28 Lives
The disaster involved a passenger bus running on the Dar es Salaam-Mbeya route – and one of those days a timber truck was headed from Iringa to Dar es Salaam.
Mwasabeja said 27 people on the passenger bus & the truck driver were killed in the smash, bringing the confirmed total dead to at least 28.
The thing was, the whole thing went down on a highway near Morogoro, leaving the emergency responders with one tough job on their hands as they worked to tally up just how many people got hurt.
Passenger Bus Bursts Into Flames After Collision
The passenger bus just burst into flames right after the head-on collision – and was basically incinerated, according to Mwasabeja.
Having the fire there made things a whole lot tougher for the emergency responders – they had to deal with getting people out of the wreckage & also figuring out who was on that bus when it happened.
Just how much this whole mess hurt is still a mystery – they cant even say for sure just what kind of shape the people that got out in one piece are in.
Preliminary Investigations Point to Dangerous Overtaking
Its still early days, but initial findings suggest that an attempt to overtake without taking proper precautions may have been the reason for that terrible accident.
The truck had apparently been heading from Iringa to Dar es Salaam when the driver made the ill-fated move to pass other vehicles, only for it to end in disaster when the truck ended up crashing head-on with the passenger bus which was coming the other way.
The authorities are still digging into what happened & are still to make a final determination on the cause of the crash.
Authorities Work to Account for Injured Passengers
It wasnt clear at the time just how many people were injured in that devastating road smash in Tanzania.
Some of the victims were rushed off to hospital, but others were still unaccounted for & officials were still trying to figure out what had happened to them.
Emergency responders were on the scene trying to make sense of the situation while officials were scrambling to get a clearer picture of who had survived and who hadnt.
Morogoro Hospital Promises Official Update
Scholastica Ndunga, the PR officer at Morogoro Regional Referral Hospital, said theyd be putting out an official statement with exact numbers of those who died & who were admitted for treatment.
That statement is expected to give some more insight into the condition of the survivors and just how serious the injuries were from the crash.
The investigation is still ongoing, with authorities expected to come good with more information as they get it.
Tanzania Crash Raises Fresh Road Safety Concerns
That dreadful crash in Morogoro has thrown a spotlight on the dangers of trying to pass other vehicles on busy highways without checking its safe to do so.
If drivers get a bit too hasty & try to overtake without making sure the road is clear, they & other oncoming drivers are at real risk of getting hit head-on in a collision.
Its a sobering reminder of just how important its to be careful when overtaking, to follow the rules of the road and to drive sensibly – especially when youre on a highway with vehicles coming the other way.
The authorities will keep digging into the crash while they try to get the final tally of those hurt in the accident.
