Kalonzo Drops Bombshell Warning to Opposition Leaders Over Ruto “Moles”
Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has sounded the alarm – warning his opposition colleagues not to become “spies” for President William Ruto as party politics and the presidential hopefuls continue to make overtures to build a united front for the next General Election, coming up in 2027.
He made the warning on a particularly somber day – at the funeral of Mwalimu Jackson Karua in Gichugu, Kirinyaga County, on Saturday October 3rd, 2026. The game was on, politically speaking, with several heavy-hitting opposition figures in attendance – including former President Uhuru Kenyatta, Martha Karua of the People’s Liberation Party (PLP), ex Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Siaya Governor James Orengo.
Kalonzo Warns Opposition Leaders Against Becoming Ruto Moles
Kalonzo sounded a stern warning to opposition leaders – they shouldn’t let themselves become “infiltrators” for the President. “If any of us becomes President Ruto’s spy, they’ll suffer the sort of consequences that befell the Biblical figure of Lot”, he cautioned.
This whole thing was happening at a time when opposition politicians were still trying to figure out how to work together for the big showdown in August 2027. Kalonzo was targeting the whole opposition movement, with its internal squabbles over party interests, who should lead the charge, and what their strategy should be.
Kalonzo Calls on Opposition to Focus on Saving Kenya
Kalonzo also urged opposition leaders to keep their eyes on the prize – which is, as he put it, saving the country. “It really is time to save this country right now”, he said at a time when the opposition was gathered in one place, with all the implications that came with that. There was Uhuru Kenyatta, Martha Karua, Kalonzo, Sifuna, Matiang’i all in attendance, as well as a reveal for former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. And of course the confirmation that some other big names were there for the burial.
Karua’s Father’s Burial Brings Opposition Leaders Together
Mwalimu Jackson Karua gets laid to rest in his family home in Kathande, Gichugu – a place where he spent many years as a much loved and respected educator – after a funeral that was held at Mugumo Primary School, a favourite haunt of his.
The ceremony brought together a pretty good size crowd for a Saturday of family, friends and political bigwigs all coming together to pay their respects to Martha Karua’s dad.
Beneath the usual eulogies for a man who lived and breathed education, the get-together turned out to be a pretty big deal for opposition politics too, with a bunch of leaders weighing in on the need for opposition unity.
Njeri Maina Challenges Opposition Leaders to Pick One Candidate
Kirinyaga Woman Rep Njeri Maina is the one who really brought the house down when she challenged all those people vying for the presidency – Martha Karua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Rigathi Gachagua, Edwin Sifuna, Fred Matiang’i and others from the United Opposition – to put aside their differences and all pitch in behind one candidate to take on Ruto in 2027.
“Look, for all those after the presidency, its fine if you lose your cool and have a bit of a row in the room, that’s just politics” Maina said to the crowd – “But the minute you step out of that room, we want to know who, just one person, you’re all going to put your weight behind to take down Ruto.”
That sort of thing is a major headache for opposition parties to sort out before the 2027 elections – can a bunch of different candidates agree to back just one person?
Word is that former President Uhuru Kenyatta asked Njeri to repeat her message before old wise saying “for those with ears lets hear them”
Sifuna Pushes Leaders to Settle 2027 Presidential Question
Sifuna used the occasion to fire a shot across the bows of opposition leaders to sort out who should be their man to run for the presidency come 2027
With Kalonzo, Matiang’i and Gachagua’s rep in the house, Sifuna asked the good people of Kirinyaga to chime in and weigh up these hopefuls.
“Roll call in Kirinyaga, who do you reckon is fit to be the oppositions next pres and deputy? Got Kalonzo, Matiang’i and Riggy G here with you today – cant we sort this lot out TODAY?” Sifuna asked
All this came as the 2027 presidential stakes start heating up with several opposition politicians jostling for position ahead of the big one.
Sifuna also had a pop at Ruto’s govt over the way they’ve been handling public funds and major govt contracts – he reckoned opposition figures deserved more access to info on the handouts the govt’s been dishing out.
Kalonzo Says Opposition Will Remain United
Kalonzo insisted that the opposition leaders were in this together, united in their efforts to bring down Ruto’s administration.
Wiper party leader Kalonzo also had a word to say about the direction the current govt is taking things – reckoned it was off track and threatening some of the national assets and institutions the previous lot had set up
It was all part of a wider conversation about the oppositions future direction – and how the opposition parties could put aside their differences and work together.
Uhuru Kenyatta Addresses His Political Position
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta, who showed up to bid farewell to yet another leader, said he wasnt bothered with seeking a political comeback and just wants to see Kenya get back on track.
He made the comment amidst all the chatter about opposition leaders getting their act together and slinging together a united candidate for 2027.
His presence – along with a host of othe opposition bigwigs – was one of the most talked about things at the gathering
Why Opposition Unity Is a Major Issue Ahead of 2027
As Kenya chugs along towards the 2027 polls, opposition unity is fast becoming the main talking point.
Lots of political figures are being linked to the opposition’s presidential plots, amongst them Karua, Kalonzo, Gachagua, Matiang’i and Sifuna.
But the real question now is, can the various political formations and the humans jostling to be the next president put their egos aside and settle on a unified strategy?
Njeri Maina’s words at the burial highlighted the pressure on opposition leaders to sort out their differences once and for all – while Kalonzo’s warning about moles in the opposition camp added to the tension.
