Shakahola Massacre: Mackenzie Faces Moment of Truth as Court Reads Verdict

Self-proclaimed Kenyan preacher Paul Nthenge Mackenzie is on tenterhooks as court officials get ready to deliver the verdict in the long-awaited trial over the Shakahola massacre, with Mackenzie and his co-accused facing murder charges in the deaths of 191 people, most of whom are children.

The Mombasa court finally got around to delivering its judgment on that Monday, 19th of October, in 2026 – one of Kenya’s most disturbing cases that’s left a whole lot of people reeling, the verdict coming after testimony from a whopping 121 witnesses and a trial that dragged on for ages as it tried to get to the bottom of the deaths of followers who were associated with Mackenize’s Good News International Church.

The whole thing got a lot of international attention when hundreds of bodies were found buried in shallow graves in Shakahola Forest, in Kilifi County, back in 2023. And the death toll has since risen to over 400, according to the latest reports from the investigation.

Pastor Mackenzie Awaits Verdict in Shakahola Massacre Trial

Paul Mackenzie and his co-defendant are facing no less than 191 counts of murder, all linked to the deaths of the children whose bodies were found in Shakahola Forest.

When the charges were read out in court in 2024, the accused just shook their heads and said not guilty. The prosecution then went ahead and called an awful lot of witnesses – over 120 of them, including survivors, family members of those who died, investigators and experts, all in a bid to prove their case.

Justice Diana Kavedza-Mochache is the one who’s delivering the judgement at the Mombasa Law Courts. What initially had been set for the 16th had to be pushed back to the 19th.

Relatives of the victims and members of the public are all waiting with bated breath for some answers and for someone to be held accountable for what happened.

What Prosecutors Told the Court About the Shakahola Deaths

Prosecutors are saying that Mackenzie had followers eat away at extreme fasting, that they genuinely believed would bring them up close and personal with Jesus.

As far as the prosecutors can see, the deaths all followed a pretty grim pattern, kids were fasted first, then teenagers, after that women, and finally men.

You’ve got a whole bunch of evidence that’s been put forward in court, I’m talking about witness statements, reports from the autopsies, forensic findings, and even accounts from people who somehow managed to survive what went down in Shakahola.

Prosecutors think that all that evidence puts a pretty clear link between Mackenzie and the murders, and they’re arguing the court should find them guilty.

All this is just part of the prosecution’s argument, and its a good idea to keep in mind that these are just claims – not the final verdict.

Mackenzie’s Lawyers Challenge Evidence in Shakahola Trial

Mackenzie’s team of defence lawyers are pushing back hard on the prosecution’s case, saying the evidence just isn’t strong enough to prove Mackenzie was actually responsible for any of the murders.

Her lawyers are calling the whole thing a “case built on very shaky ground, with lots of second-hand stories, and not a great deal to back it up from the forensic evidence”.

The defence team is saying that just because the prosecution has got a whole load of evidence doesn’t mean that any of it is enough to prove guilt.

What the court will say in the end, and who’s going to be held responsible for what, will depend on the evidence that’s been put forward by both the prosecution and the defence.

Shakahola Death Toll Rises Above 400

The Shakahola nightmare first hit the headlines back in April 2023 when authorities went in to rescue followers and started to look into reports of people dying off as part of the religious group.

It eventually turned out that the operation stumbled upon a bunch of shallow graves in the forest , & before long, the number of bodies they’d recovered had surpassed 400.

By 2024, the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights had managed to tally up a death toll of 429, with no way of identifying some of the victims & this was making life even more painful for families who were still out searching for missing relatives.

It’s become clear that some pretty serious questions need to be answered, just how did this happen and why on earth did no one spot the warning signs earlier

Who Is Pastor Paul Mackenzie?

Mackenzie started the Good News International Church back in 2003, & he’d built up a following in Nairobi and all along Kenya’s coast.

He was hauled in by the police way back in 2017 on suspicion of pushing people towards radicalism but in the end he was let off. Then, in 2019, he was arrested again after two kids died from starvation in Shakahola.

By the time April 2023 rolled around he’d been arrested yet again, this time after some of his followers were rescued and people started dying off after being told to fast.

To go along with the 191 murder charges, Mackenzie is also up on charges of manslaughter, terrorism and all sorts of other alleged offences that are all connected to the Shakahola tragedy.

Then in February 2026, Mackenzie & some of his pals were also charged with 52 bodies discovered in shallow graves near Kwa Binzaro – a case which is completely separate from the 191 murder trial.

Shakahola Case Sparks Calls for Tighter Regulation of Religious Organisations

The Shakahola deaths sent shockwaves all over the country and recapped the whole debate about how to regulate religious groups in Kenya.

The thing is, the Shakahola case raised some huge red flags, about how we look after vulnerable followers, about just how powerful religious leaders think they are , about how this country oversees religious institutions, and just how the police respond to warning signs.

The families of the victims are still trying to get some answers and the whole business of identifying the bodies is still an important part of the wider investigation.

These court proceedings are a big step towards figuring out who’s to blame for the 191 deaths but its worth noting the other cases coming out of Shakahola mean the court process is gonna be a lot bigger than just this one case.
