Njoroge Wainaina Dumps UDA, Unveils New Party Ahead of 2027 Elections
Kieni MP Njoroge Wainaina has finally made it clear he’s leaving the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) with big news – he’s got his own party brewing. The vehicle he’s chosen to carry the people of Kieni is called the Ufanisi Kenya Party, and Wainaina unveiled it in a meeting in Kieni Constituency, Nyeri County, on October 17th 2026.
The reason behind his decision to ditch the UDA & create his own party lies in the interests of the local residents & a desire for Mt Kenya to cut its own path. As he explained in a car analogy, essentially, the people of Mt Kenya went to the party with someone else’s car, and it’s high time for them to have one of their own. “We’ve been told we went to a wedding with someone else’s Motor, so Ive built my own 504, that’ll take the people of Kieni, and that’s the Ufanisi Kenya Party”
This announcement comes at a time when Mt Kenya leaders are still juggling political allegiances ahead of the 2027 election, searching for a party to call their own.
Njoroge Wainaina Announces Exit From UDA
Wainaina’s departure means he’s leaving behind the party under whose ticket he won his parliamentary seat in 2022.
The Kieni MP reckons his decision to launch Ufanisi Kenya Party came from what he feels are the best interests of Kieni’s residents & the general desire to set an independent course for Mt Kenya.
It seems he wants this new party to act as a platform to push the interests of Kieni folk & reach out to supporters beyond Nyeri County.
The latest turn of events in the region adds to the political backroom deals being cut as leaders position themselves for the 2027 General Election.
Wainaina Unveils Ufanisi Kenya Party
During the same meeting in Kieni, Wainaina officially rolled out the Ufanisi Kenya Party, describing it as ‘the car he’s chosen to drive to the polls for Kieni’.
His car metaphor was his way of addressing previous jibes that Mt Kenya politicians were hitching a ride with someone else’s vehicle, a wedding they had to attend. “Because we’ve been told at times we went to a wedding in another mans car, I’ve made my own 504 , which is the Ufanisi Kenya Party , that’ll carry the people of Kieni.”
The clue is that the Ufanisi Kenya Party is meant to be a fresh alternative, not some rehash of an existing outfit.
Ufanisi Kenya Party Targets National Reach
Wainaina is adamant that the Ufanisi Kenya Party wont be stuck in Nyeri County or the Mt Kenya region, as people might assume. He says the party’s got its sights set on politicians and voters all across the country, a clear signal it’s out to establish a national presence before the next elections come around.
Its not just for Nyeri folks, he says, “its a national party and anyone can join” – quite a declaration that puts the party’s ambitions beyond its founder’s home turf of Kieni constituency. Of course, whether they actually achieve a national reach will depend on just how good they get at actually running the party, getting the right people, getting organised and delivering the goods as we get closer to election time.
Wainaina Names Rigathi Gachagua as Nyeri’s First Prominent Party Leader
Wainaina has also been drawing comparisons with Rigathi Gachagua, who started up the Democracy for the Citizens Party, a big name in Nyeri County politics. Wainaina figures himself as the second top party leader in the county, after Gachagua.
There’s the first, Rigathi, then there’s me, he says – in effect saying he is second in line.
His comments do highlight that Nyeri is starting to produce more and more political options, as we move ever forward towards the 2027 general election. However, there is still no clear word on if Wainainas new party will be joining forces with DCP or some other party.
Mt Kenya Political Alliances Shift Ahead of 2027 Elections
Wainaina’s decision to leave UDA to set up his own party comes at a time when things are getting a lot more interesting in Mt Kenya region, where politicians are busy juggling their positions ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The Ufanisi Kenya Party now gives voters and politicians another option, something they might want to consider over and above the usual party suspects. For UDA, Wainainas departure is a big deal because he was elected to parliament on their ticket just a couple of years ago. And for the new party, the next big challenge will be turning its ideals into a reality, getting organised and winning supporters all across the country.
Only time will tell if the Ufanisi Kenya Party will become a major player in the next election though.
