Matiang’i Sends Message to Kalonzo, Sifuna and Gachagua Ahead of 2027 Polls
Jubilee Party leader and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has had a word to say to the opposition leaders – to get their act together if they want to stand a chance against President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
Matiang’i bluntly told his colleagues to put their differences aside and work as a team if they want to come up with a winning formula, saying the opposition is going to need to join forces if they want to give Ruto a run for his money.
Speaking during a church service in Nairobi, Matiang’i made it clear to the opposition leaders that they need to get on the same page if they have any hope of actually taking over the country.
Matiang’i Urges Opposition Leaders to Unite Against Ruto
Matiang’i in effect told opposition leaders that they should pool their resources and work together, rather than going off and chasing their own separate political dreams in the run up to the 2027 elections.
He reckons that if they put their differences to one side, the opposition would have a fighting chance of taking on Ruto and actually forming the next government.
“We need to come together, work together and find an alternative if we want to have a shot at forming the next government,” Matiang’i said straight out.
His comments come at a time when more and more people are calling on opposition parties and politicians to get their act together and come up with a common strategy for the next presidential election.
Matiang’i Says Kenya Is Headed in the Wrong Direction
Matiang’i also took a pop at the direction the country is heading under Ruto’s administration. He says that all the country needs is a change of leadership to turn things around and get back on track.
Matiangis comments reflect how he’s positioning himself as an alternative to the current administration, with an eye to the 2027 General Election.
He was accompanied to the church service by several other opposition leaders who shared his concerns – including former Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu and Kitutu Chache South MP Anthony Kibagendi.
Matiang’i Condemns Heckling Outside Nairobi Church
Matiang’i wasn’t having it when it came to a group of youths who allegedly caused a ruckus outside a church during a gathering – spreading the claim that some top Nairobi officials had actually organised the whole scene to make trouble.
He gave a stern message about the need for politicians to leave each other alone and let them get on with their business without getting harassed or interrupted. “I’m a no-nonsense kind of person, I don’t beat about the bush, and under my watch this sort of nonsense isn’t going to fly. What we need is for people to show some tolerance and get on with things in peace.”
Matiang’i’s comments really drive home his opposition to any kind of political disruptions and his plea for a more peaceful atmosphere for politics. But it’s worth noting that Matiang’i himself made the claim that leaders had orchestrated the heckling – not that anyone’s independently confirmed it.
Matiang’i, Kalonzo, Sifuna and Gachagua Eye 2027 Race
Matiang’i is now openly saying he wants to run for president in 2027, which puts him right in the mix with lots of other opposition figures who want to give Ruto a run for his money. Other opposition leaders looking to put their hat in the ring include Kalonzo Musyoka from Wiper, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
The fact that all these people are now going to be vying for the top spot has got a lot of people calling on the opposition leaders to get their act together and pick a single candidate who can really bring their supporters on board and make a meaningful challenge to the incumbent.
Matiang’i’s latest call for unity and cooperation is a pretty clear message that choosing a single candidate is going to be a major bone of contention in opposition talks leading up to the election. Whether or not these people will actually put their differences aside and agree on a single candidate is still a major question mark right now as the 2027 election starts to take shape.
