Bandits Kill 65-Year-Old Man Collecting Firewood in Isiolo

A 65-year-old man was gunned down by suspected bandits while out collecting firewood in Moremun, Burut Location out in the sticks of Isiolo County – the latest grim reminder that there are still serious security issues in Kenya’s north

The poor sod who met his maker was Loteleng Nakerebut, a fella from Rimuruti in Laikipia County, who was shot dead on a Friday afternoon, October 16th 2026, around 1 o’clock. That’s what the police are saying anyway.

This latest murder is coming at a time when police and security folk are trying their best to sort out the problem of banditry and rustling in Isiolo and the surrounding counties.

Bandits Shoot Dead 65-Year-Old Man in Isiolo

Apparently it was Nakerebut’s uncle who first tipped off the police about what had gone down. He told them that it seemed bandits had turned up and shot his nephew dead while he was out gathering firewood in Moremun.

The bloke’s wound was pretty nasty, a single bullet that smashed into his side, then came out the other side of his ribcage. He was dead before the paramedics even arrived.

A team of coppers turned up to take a look at the scene in Moremun, took some photos and started making a few notes to help with their investigation.

The body’s been taken to the Isiolo County Referral Hospital mortuary where it’s waiting for a post mortem. The one thing the police can’t figure out yet is what made the bandits choose to murder the poor chap.

Police are still working to figure out why this happened.

Police Intensify Patrols After Isiolo Killing

Following the bloody shooting police have cranked up patrols in the area , partly because of a nagging fear that the killers might strike again or that others might launch their own revenge attacks.

All this has left locals really spooked, and they’re crying out for a way to put an end to the constant security scares that have become a regular thing in the region.

Now the police are getting to the bottom of how Nakerebut came to be killed and who was behind it.

One Killed, Another Injured in Suspected Meru Retaliatory Attack

At the same time another suspected bandits’ raid left one person dead and another badly hurt when armed men stormed a group of temporary herders’ camps in Rikiaub B Village, Igembe Central Sub-County, Meru County.

The gang turned up around midnight on Wednesday, 14 October 2026 , and just started shooting for no reason at the herders.

Police reckon the attack might have been a revenge job after Meru herders had a go at some camels belonging to Somali herders.

The 57-year- old Geoffrey Kimathi was the man who lost his life, he was from Athwana Location in Tigania East.

Kimathi got shot in the back and the bullet came out of his chest on the left side.

The other bloke who got hit got a bullet to the leg below the knee , although he was lucky enough to have been found in time to get to hospital, where he was said to be in a pretty fair condition.

Kimathi’s body is at the Tigania Sub-County Hospital mortuary in Muthara , waiting for a post mortem.

13 Cows Killed in Meru Attack

There’s been a pretty grim suspected retaliatory raid, which has also left 13 cows dead and 11 more in pretty rough shape according to what we’ve been told by the police.

The whole thing has only added to worries about the tension between cattle and camel herders in the area.

The suspected retaliatory motive there has also got a lot of people worried that unless disputes over livestock get sorted out there could be even more violence on the horizon.

The police are saying they will be investigating this and trying to figure out who was behind the killings and how it all went down.

Seven Counties Targeted in Anti-Banditry Operation

Places like Isiolo and Meru are among those affected by security concerns tied to cattle rustling and armed attacks.

The government is running a special security operation to take on Baringo, West Pokot, Turkana, Samburu, Marsabit, Meru and Isiolo counties – all of which have been having some major issues with cattle rustling and other crime.

The operation is aimed at stopping cattle rustling and other problems but as it stands right now incidents of violence have still been kicking off in some spots.

Before anyone gets too hopeful though the government has also recognised the need to bring in some new ideas like strategic investment and sustainable development to really tackle the roots of the problem in Kenya’s northern frontier and the Kerio Valley belt.

Murkomen Outlines Long-Term Plan to Fight Cattle Rustling

Kipchumba Murkomen Interior Cabinet Secretary has said the governments long term vision is to get communities onside and working with them to tackle the problem of livestock theft and insecurity.

The strategy also wants to encourage people to get into some kind of legitimate business or income stream which will actually contribute to the national good.

It all comes down to realizing that stopping cattle rustling isn’t just about security operations, its also about sorting out peoples livelihoods and getting communities on board.
