Why Former CS Justin Muturi’s Easter Post has Sparked Controversy

Why Former CS Justin Muturi’s Easter Post has Sparked Controversy

When former Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi shared an Easter message on his X account on Friday, April 18, he likely did not anticipate the controversy it would stir.

The graphic, which featured an image of Muturi emerging from clouds beside a cross, quickly caught the attention of Kenyan netizens. While the Easter message itself was included—albeit in a small font—most users found the overall design unsettling.

A significant number of online users interpreted the imagery as somber and confusing, with many likening it to an obituary rather than a festive holiday greeting. The reactions ranged from disapproval to satire, with several people suggesting the poster conveyed the wrong message.

“Had to read again and again—thought this was some obituary, bad news or a fake account,” one X user commented.

Another user wrote, “The communications manager and the graphics designer need to be out of the payroll like yesterday.”

Some individuals offered constructive criticism. One user recommended using brighter, warmer tones such as gold or yellow, and incorporating symbols of joy like flowers and festive headlines. The use of clouds, they argued, typically evokes themes of mourning, not celebration.

In addition to concerns about the visual design, others questioned Muturi’s decision to include Kenya’s Coat of Arms on the poster. This drew criticism, given that he is no longer a government official. Muturi was dismissed by President William Ruto and replaced by Geoffrey Ruku, who was sworn in as the new Public Service Cabinet Secretary on Thursday, April 17.

Since his departure, Muturi has become an outspoken critic of the current administration. He has publicly condemned President Ruto’s leadership and highlighted what he describes as systemic inefficiencies within the government.

In one particularly striking allegation, Muturi claimed that President Ruto pressured him to sign a Ksh129 billion deal with Russian investors while he was still at the airport. The agreement, reportedly worth $1 billion, was tied to the government’s initiative to plant 15 billion trees.

According to Muturi, he was asked to approve the contract without having the opportunity to review it. He has since described Ruto’s presidency as “the most unfortunate thing that could have happened to Kenya.”
