Waluke Accuses Bungoma Governor Lusaka of Spending KSh 35M Monthly on Garbage
Sirisia Member of Parliament, Hon. John Waluke, has raised alarm over what he terms as questionable and excessive expenditure by the Bungoma County Government under the leadership of Governor Kenneth Lusaka.
According to the legislator, the county is reportedly spending approximately KSh 35 million each month on garbage collection alone—a figure he described as both outrageous and indicative of deeper financial mismanagement.
Speaking during a public address in his constituency over the weekend at the burial service of the late Mzee Nathan Sirengo, Hon. Waluke strongly condemned what he referred to as the misuse of public resources.
He stated that the scale of alleged financial wastage in the county government points to systemic corruption and deliberate misappropriation of taxpayer funds.
“The notion that Bungoma County is spending KSh 35 million monthly to collect garbage is absurd. It is both economically indefensible and a clear insult to the intelligence of our people. In towns like Sirisia, no garbage collection is evident, yet such exorbitant figures are reportedly being expended,” the MP remarked.

Hon. Waluke further called upon the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to immediately initiate investigations into the financial dealings of the Bungoma County Government.
He insisted that a majority of county officials are implicated in the alleged plundering of public funds, and that accountability must be pursued without fear or favour.
“I urge the EACC to take swift and decisive action. The people of Bungoma deserve to know how their money is being used—or misused. Corruption in county offices has become rampant, and it is clear that several officials are using their positions for personal gain rather than public service,” he said.
In addition, the legislator did not spare the County Assembly of Bungoma, accusing Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) of failing in their constitutional oversight role.
He noted with concern that many MCAs have remained silent in the face of increasing public discontent, suggesting that some may be complicit or unwilling to challenge the executive.
“It is disappointing that the County Assembly, which should serve as a check against excesses by the executive, has instead become dormant. Many MCAs seem to have forgotten the core reason for their election. They were elected to be the voice of the people, yet they remain mute even as public funds are looted,” Waluke observed.
The MP called on the youth of Bungoma to become more engaged in matters of governance and public accountability. He encouraged them to rise up and demand transparency, especially regarding funds allocated for essential services and vulnerable groups such as persons living with disabilities (PWDs).
“Young people must awaken from political apathy and play an active role in defending their rights. Let them visit the governor’s office, peacefully and lawfully, to demand answers. Public funds must not be treated as personal wealth by those in leadership,” he urged.
Hon. Waluke also disclosed that he had received threats intended to intimidate him into silence. However, he affirmed his unwavering commitment to speaking out against corruption, stating that he is ready to face legal challenges if it means defending the interests of the people of Bungoma.
“Someone sent me a threatening message, warning me to stop speaking out or face legal consequences. Let it be known that I am not afraid. If called to court, I will stand firm and defend the people of Bungoma. Leaders must be held accountable, and I will not be silenced in the face of injustice,” he declared.
As pressure mounts on the Bungoma County Government to provide clarity on the alleged KSh 35 million monthly expenditure, Hon. Waluke’s remarks have intensified public scrutiny and drawn national attention to the management of county funds. He has vowed to continue exposing corruption and advocating for responsible governance, regardless of opposition or threats.
