UK Responds After Kenya High Court  Issues Arrest Warrant for Briton in Agnes Wanjiru’s Murder

The United Kingdom has pledged its support for justice after a Kenyan court issued an arrest warrant for a British national linked to the 2012 killing of Agnes Wanjiru.

The UK government has broken its silence following the High Court’s decision to issue an arrest warrant against a British citizen accused of murdering Agnes Wanjiru, a 21-year-old mother whose death has remained unresolved for more than a decade.

In a brief statement released on Tuesday, September 16, a government spokesperson extended condolences to Wanjiru’s family and reiterated Britain’s commitment to supporting accountability.

“Our thoughts remain with the family of Agnes Wanjiru and we remain absolutely committed to helping them secure justice,” the spokesperson said. “We understand that the Kenyan Director of Public Prosecutions has determined that a British National should face trial in relation to the murder of Ms Wanjiru in 2012. This is subject to ongoing legal proceedings and we will not comment further at this stage.”

Wanjiru, a hairdresser and mother of a four-month-old baby, was last seen alive at Lions Court Lodge in Nanyuki on March 31, 2012. Her body was later discovered in a septic tank at the same lodge on June 5 of that year, sparking outrage and repeated calls for justice.

On Tuesday, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) told the High Court that evidence gathered directly links the British suspect to the murder. The DPP subsequently applied for an arrest warrant to pave the way for extradition proceedings.

Justice Alexander Muteti granted the application, ruling that there was sufficient evidence to justify murder charges. He also confirmed that murder qualifies as an extraditable offence under Kenyan law.

In a statement, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) welcomed the ruling.

“The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) successfully secured an arrest warrant against a British National in relation to the 2012 murder of Agnes Wanjiru in Nanyuki. This follows an application made before the High Court at Nanyuki, presided over by Justice Alexander Muteti, who ruled that there is probable cause to institute murder charges against the accused,” the ODPP noted.

It added that Acting Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Vincent Monda and Head of the Homicide Division Gikui Gichuhi confirmed extradition proceedings would now be initiated to ensure the suspect faces trial in Kenya.

The matter will be mentioned again on October 21, 2025, for further directions.
