UDA Summons Senator Gloria Orwoba Over Fred Matiang’i, Accused of Disloyalty

UDA Summons Senator Gloria Orwoba Over Fred Matiang’i, Accused of Disloyalty

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party disciplinary committee has summoned nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba to appear before it over a potential violation of the party’s code of conduct.

Orwoba is under scrutiny for several actions, including her presence at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on April 17, 2025, where she welcomed former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.

She also accompanied Matiang’i during his political rally at Gusii Stadium and made disparaging remarks about the government during a local radio interview. The UDA party claims that these actions suggest her alignment with a political group opposing the party that nominated her to the Senate.

The party has deemed her conduct as disloyal and contrary to the values expected of its members. UDA asserts that Orwoba’s behavior constitutes gross misconduct under both the party’s constitution and Kenya’s Article 75, which outlines the conduct expected of public officers. The party further emphasized that she is in breach of the code of conduct she committed to upon her nomination.

The disciplinary committee specifically accused Orwoba of working to promote another political entity while maintaining her membership in UDA. As a result, the committee has directed her to appear at the party’s headquarters on May 16, 2025, for a hearing. Should the committee find her actions unjustifiable, it will forward its decision to the National Executive Committee for further disciplinary action.

The summons also outlined that if Orwoba is found liable, the decision will be executed immediately. The senator has been informed that she may represent herself or be accompanied by an advocate during the proceedings.

This latest controversy follows a turbulent period in Orwoba’s political career. She had been suspended from the Senate earlier this year after making unsubstantiated claims of sexual harassment against the Senate clerk. Although the suspension was initially set for 79 days, it was later reduced to 30 days, and she was readmitted to the Senate just weeks before the UDA summons.

In September 2023, Orwoba had been suspended for failing to provide evidence to support her allegations against the Senate clerk. She sought legal recourse by obtaining a court order that temporarily stayed the Senate’s resolution. However, the order was eventually lifted after she failed to appear before a special Senate committee to address the accusations.

Orwoba now faces additional scrutiny, with her actions being examined for potential violations of the party’s constitution and a breach of the trust placed in her as a member of the UDA party.
