Two MPs, Two Mysterious Deaths: The One Unsettling Pattern of Mysterious Deaths of Kasipul Political Leaders
Kasipul Constituency in Homa Bay County has witnessed a haunting pattern of untimely and mysterious deaths among its political leaders.
The tragic losses of two sitting Members of Parliament (MPs), Peter Owidi and Charles Ong’ondo Were, have left the region grappling with unanswered questions and an unsettling political climate.
The first death occurred in 2005 when MP Peter Owidi passed away under mysterious circumstances at Nairobi Hospital. His family claimed that Owidi had been poisoned after consuming a meal of chips and chicken at a restaurant in Nakuru while traveling to his constituency in South Nyanza.
At the time, Kasipul-Kabondo, as the constituency was known, was a politically charged region, and Owidi’s sudden death raised suspicions of foul play. ODM leader Raila Odinga, who was then Roads Minister, faced pressure to explain Owidi’s absence from public functions, with many speculating that the MP may have been assassinated.
A call for an investigation was made at his funeral, yet the questions surrounding his death remain unresolved.

Fast forward to April 30, 2025, and another Kasipul legislator, Charles Ong’ondo Were, met a similarly tragic end. The second-term MP was shot and killed in a premeditated attack while driving through Nairobi.
Eyewitnesses reported that a motorcycle with two passengers pulled up next to his car at a traffic light, and the passenger fired multiple shots at Were before the assailants fled the scene.
Despite efforts to rush him to the hospital, Were succumbed to his injuries. An autopsy revealed that the MP had been shot five times, with bullets piercing vital organs, including the heart, lungs, and spine. The targeted nature of the killing only added to suspicions that the attack was politically motivated.
The deaths of Owidi and Were, though separated by years, exhibit a chilling pattern. Both leaders were victims of violent and mysterious circumstances, raising concerns about the safety of political leaders in Kasipul and the wider Kenyan political environment.
These unresolved deaths leave behind a legacy of fear and suspicion, with the region still awaiting answers to the haunting questions that continue to cast a shadow over its political landscape.
The unsettling pattern of political violence in Kasipul serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that political leaders face in a volatile and often dangerous environment.
