Several Injured After Lorry Rams into Bus Full of Passengers Along Thika Road
A Thika Road accident on Monday, February 23, left several people nursing injuries after a passenger bus collided with a canter near the Safari Park Hotel, causing massive traffic disruption along one of Nairobi’s busiest highways.
The crash occurred along the Nairobi-bound lane, at a time when heavy rains have continued to pound parts of the country, significantly reducing visibility for motorists.
Passenger Bus Overturns Near Safari Park Hotel
Preliminary reports indicate that the collision happened near the Safari Park Hotel, a notorious traffic hotspot along Thika Road. Photos and videos seen by Kenyans.co.ke showed the passenger bus lying on its side, while the canter had rammed into a roadside guardrail.
The positioning of the vehicles suggested that the accident may have occurred as one driver attempted to overtake the other.
Despite the dramatic scene, no fatalities had been reported at the time of publication. However, the situation quickly turned chaotic as rain continued to fall and curious onlookers gathered around the wreckage.
Eyewitness Describes Rainy, Misty Conditions
According to witnesses, who spoke to kenyans.co.ke, the accident affected both lanes, leading to congestion on both the Thika-bound and the Nairobi-bound lanes.
“It was rainy and a bit misty, and visibility was a bit poor as we were heading to the Nairobi CBD,” the eyewitness said. Traffic was intense after the incident as it stretched all the way to Githurai.”
The heavy traffic buildup left hundreds of commuters stranded for hours, once again highlighting the vulnerability of Thika Road during adverse weather conditions.
Police Move In to Restore Order
Police officers and emergency responders were quickly deployed to the scene to manage traffic and oversee the removal of the damaged vehicles.
Efforts were focused on restoring traffic flow and preventing further incidents along the slippery highway.
The accident comes at a time when the country is experiencing heavy rainfall, which experts warn significantly increases the risk of road accidents due to reduced visibility and slippery surfaces.
Kenya Meteorological Department Issues Heavy Rainfall Warning
Just a day before the crash, the Kenya Meteorological Department cautioned that Kiambu and Nairobi were among regions expected to experience very heavy rainfall within 24 hours.
In a notice issued on Sunday, the department warned that the Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, Central Highland, and South East Lowlands would receive very heavy rainfall, exceeding 50mm, between 9am Sunday, February 22, and 9 am Monday, February 23.
Residents were advised to remain vigilant and avoid crossing flooded rivers and roads.
Another Recent Thika Road Tragedy
The latest Thika Road accident comes barely a month after another tragic crash along the same highway involving a bus full of teachers.
In that incident, one teacher lost their life and several others were injured after a 33-seater matatu lost control and rammed into them outside City Primary School in Ngara on Saturday, January 31, 2026.
With heavy rains persisting across parts of the country, road safety experts are urging motorists to exercise extreme caution, reduce speed, and maintain safe distances.
