Six Dead and 20 Injured in Early Morning Fire Incident in Makina, Kibera
On Saturday morning, May 24, a devastating fire broke out in Makina, Kibera, claiming the lives of six people and leaving 20 others severely injured. The incident occurred behind Kambi along the route to Eagles, affecting more than 40 households and causing widespread property loss in the community.
Area Member of Parliament Peter Orero confirmed the tragedy, describing it as a deeply sorrowful moment for the residents of Kibera. Among the injured are one man, two women, and three children, all of whom were rushed to hospital for emergency treatment.
“This is a heartbreaking moment for all of us in Kibra. We mourn with the families who have lost their loved ones and are committed to supporting them through this difficult time,” MP Orero stated in an official communication.
The cause of the fire is currently unknown. However, investigations are underway to determine the origins of the blaze. Orero assured residents that authorities are collaborating closely with relevant officials to establish the cause and implement long-term safety measures aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future.
Emergency response teams promptly arrived at the scene to provide medical care, counseling, and immediate relief to those affected, facilitated by the area MP. The Nairobi City County Fire Brigade, supported by local community members, successfully contained the fire, as confirmed by the Red Cross.
This tragedy follows a similar fire incident earlier this week in Nairobi County’s Mathare B slums, where five people lost their lives, including three adults and two children. Four others remain in critical condition. Additionally, a recent fire in Rongo town, Migori County, caused significant financial losses to business owners despite no casualties being reported.
The community and authorities continue to mourn the loss of lives and emphasize the urgent need for enhanced fire safety protocols to protect vulnerable populations in informal settlements across the region. Further updates on the investigations and support measures are expected in the coming days.
