Senator Orwoba Seeks Action After Woman Woke Up in Hospital Without Clothes After Boarding Mash Poa
Nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba has written to the management of Mash Poa bus company demanding a formal incident report after a disturbing case involving a female passenger who was allegedly drugged, robbed, and sexually assaulted while traveling on one of the company’s buses to Mombasa.
The letter, dated Monday, April 21, and addressed to the company’s management, calls for an immediate and detailed explanation regarding the events that transpired aboard the bus. Senator Orwoba has emphasized the urgency of the matter, urging Mash Poa to submit the report by close of business on Tuesday, April 22.
“Given the gravity of the situation, I urge you to prioritise this matter and provide a full incident report detailing the events as they transpired, including any actions taken by your staff and management in response to the incident,” the Senator stated.
“I trust that you will treat this request with the urgency and seriousness it demands. I look forward to your swift response,” she added.
The senator stressed that this incident raises serious and immediate concerns about the safety measures and response protocols of public transport companies, particularly those servicing long-distance routes.
According to Senator Orwoba, the alleged assault of Ms. Omondi has triggered alarm among many frequent passengers and highlights the need for comprehensive safety frameworks on board commercial transport vehicles. The requested report is expected to shed light on the company’s internal response, security measures, and cooperation with authorities.
“As you may be aware, Ms. Omondi was reportedly dragged, robbed, and sexually assaulted while travelling on your service. This shocking event raises serious concerns about passenger safety and the protocols in place to protect individuals travelling with your company,” she wrote.
In a series of social media posts, the victim detailed her traumatic experience, which reportedly occurred on Monday, April 14. She claims that a man seated next to her handed her two cups of tea to hold. After that interaction, she lost consciousness.
She later regained awareness at Coast General Hospital, where she learned she had been brought in by a Mash Poa conductor in the company of a boda boda rider. Disoriented and without recollection of what transpired, she discovered that several of her personal items, including cash and her phone, were missing. She also noted that she was no longer wearing some of the clothes she had on when she boarded the bus.
What followed compounded her distress. The woman alleges that the bus company declined to provide her with any information regarding the identity of the man who sat next to her. She also claimed that hospital staff at Coast General refused to open a file on her case, leaving her in a state of confusion and helplessness.
“This is a bus company I have used diligently since I moved to Diani—almost three times a month. Most of the Nairobi team knows me by name,” she wrote online.
“I need an explanation of how I woke up in the hospital without some clothes, yet I had them when I boarded the bus. I am losing it because I don’t have answers, and all I’m getting from Mash is: ‘We don’t know.'”
Senator Orwoba has vowed to follow up on the matter until full accountability is established. She noted that the incident demands a thorough investigation and that the victim deserves justice, transparency, and dignity in how the matter is handled.
The Senator also urged transport companies to prioritize passenger safety and ensure all staff are adequately trained to respond swiftly and compassionately to emergency situations, including those involving suspected criminal acts.
As the matter gains public attention, many are calling on the relevant authorities, including the police and transport regulatory bodies, to launch a full investigation and ensure that justice is served.
