Raila Odinga and Somaliland President Abdirahman Irro Hold High-Level Talks in Nairobi
Former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga held a high-level meeting with President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Irro) of the Republic of Somaliland during the latter’s official visit to Kenya. The meeting took place at Odinga’s residence in Nairobi and was confirmed in a statement released by Somaliland Presidential Spokesperson Hussein Aden Igeh (Deyr) on Monday night.
The two leaders engaged in a strategic dialogue aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between Kenya and Somaliland. Their discussions focused on enhancing cooperation in areas such as peace and security, economic integration, education, cultural exchange, and diplomatic engagement.
“During their deliberations, the two leaders engaged in a candid and visionary dialogue aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation across strategic sectors,” the statement noted.
The talks also addressed the broader geopolitical landscape of the Horn of Africa. Both Odinga and Abdillahi emphasized the importance of African-led solutions and mutual recognition in addressing regional challenges. They advocated for inclusive development as a cornerstone for sustainable peace and stability in the region.
According to the statement, President Abdillahi expressed his deep appreciation for Odinga’s historical and ongoing support for Somaliland. He praised Odinga for his commitment to justice and his moral leadership, which he said has amplified Somaliland’s voice across the continent and internationally.
“His Excellency extended his heartfelt gratitude for Odinga’s unwavering moral leadership and steadfast solidarity with the people of Somaliland,” the statement added. “He lauded Odinga’s enduring commitment to justice, dignity, and the pursuit of self-determination.”
President Abdillahi also reiterated Somaliland’s commitment to being a constructive regional actor. He pledged that Somaliland would continue working to preserve peace, promote regional stability, and advance development efforts in collaboration with neighboring states.
“The president underscored Somaliland’s enduring role as a reliable and principled partner, dedicated to fostering inclusive development, security, and sustainable prosperity for both its people and the wider Horn of Africa region,” the statement concluded.
This meeting marks a significant step in Somaliland’s diplomatic outreach and reflects Odinga’s continued influence in shaping regional dialogue and cooperation efforts.
