An unfortunate incident occurred on Sunday, May 4, during President William Ruto’s development tour of Migori County. The head of state narrowly escaped injury after a shoe was hurled at him while addressing a public gathering in Kehancha town.

A viral video published by Independent.co.ke shows the president reacting swiftly, deflecting the shoe mid-air as it passed through his security detail. The incident happened just moments after President Ruto began delivering a speech focused on the reduction of farming input costs for local farmers.

The sudden disruption forced the president to pause his address briefly. Security officers quickly intervened and apprehended the individuals responsible before they could flee the scene.

Despite the commotion, President Ruto resumed his speech shortly after. In a display of composure, he instructed the police to release the suspects.

The incident has sparked widespread condemnation from local leaders and residents of Migori County. Many expressed embarrassment and disappointment, emphasizing that such acts do not reflect the values of the community.

United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Woman Leader Bevin Bhoke described the event as regrettable and deeply unfortunate. She extended an apology to the president on behalf of the Kuria community, stating that Kuria people are peace-loving and respectful.

Bhoke further urged that those involved be subjected to the due process of law, underscoring the need to preserve the dignity of the community.

Migori County UDA Youth Leader, Byron Ogiga, also condemned the act in the strongest terms. He expressed concern that such behavior could jeopardize the region’s development prospects and strain the relationship between the Kuria community and the national government.

Ogiga emphasized the importance of maintaining order and respect during official visits, particularly at a time when the Kuria community is advocating for county status. He added that the perpetrators should be held accountable to serve as a deterrent for similar actions in the future.

The incident remains under investigation, with law enforcement maintaining vigilance as President Ruto continues his tour in the region.
