Political Firestorm as Senator Cherargei Guns for Governor George Natembeya Impeachment

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has reaffirmed his position on recent remarks concerning Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, accusing the county boss of promoting tribalism.

In response to residents of Trans Nzoia who came out in defence of their governor, Senator Cherargei reiterated his call for Natembeya’s impeachment.

“Governor Natembeya should be impeached for stoking tribal animosity, promoting division, poor development, and facing corruption allegations. These are impeachable offences under the Constitution of Kenya 2010, for violating Articles 10, 27, 73, 74, 75, and 174,” he stated.

The senator further criticized the governor’s leadership, saying, “He is unfit to serve as Governor of Trans Nzoia County and is instead better suited to be a tribal mobiliser, pushing divisive rhetoric.”

On Monday afternoon, residents of Trans Nzoia gathered to express strong support for Governor Natembeya. They rejected Senator Cherargei’s remarks, stating that only locals had the mandate to decide on their county leadership.

“We do not want leaders from outside to dictate Trans Nzoia’s affairs. You are pushing for Governor Natembeya’s removal, yet you neither vote here nor serve as an MCA in this county,” one resident said. “You may have impeachment plans in the Senate, but we will not entertain them,” he added.

Another resident emphasized the collective support from counties across the Western region—including Busia, Bungoma, Kakamega, Vihiga, and Trans Nzoia—highlighting regional unity as critical for national political influence.

“Governor Natembeya represents all Luhyas. He is spearheading efforts to unite Western Kenya to secure stronger representation at the national level. That unity is what some fear,” the resident noted.

Governor Natembeya, a former Regional Commissioner, has drawn criticism from political leaders for his vocal opposition to the Kenya Kwanza government.

During the funeral of Moses Wetang’ula’s mother earlier this year, the governor confronted President William Ruto, calling for action on the issue of forced disappearances.

Following that incident, National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah accused Natembeya of inciting ethnic division through his political rhetoric.

Since then, the governor’s convoy has been attacked multiple times. He has alleged that these attacks are deliberate attempts to silence his outspoken views.
