Tensions remain high in Kuria West following an alarming incident in which a shoe was thrown at President William Ruto during a public address. The projectile narrowly missed the president’s head, prompting immediate concern and swift action from security personnel.

The president had been speaking at a rally in Kehancha, addressing the issue of high farming input costs, when the incident occurred. Midway through his speech, just as he was saying, “We will reduce the cost of…”, a shoe was hurled toward the podium. The president paused briefly, visibly startled, as his security detail quickly secured the stage. The moment was captured on video and has since circulated widely online.

In response, police officers in Kuria West confirmed the arrest of three individuals suspected of involvement in the incident. Authorities have described the act as “reckless and regrettable,” and believe it may have been politically motivated. Preliminary findings suggest the attack may have been premeditated ahead of the president’s scheduled visit.

A police officer, speaking to Independent.co.ke on condition of anonymity, disclosed that the suspects are believed to be aligned with two rival Members of Parliament from the region. He further stated that investigations are ongoing and that more arrests are expected.

“We are closing in on a key suspect who is believed to have played a central role in the incident,” the officer revealed. He indicated that the arrest of this individual could lead to a significant breakthrough in the investigation.

Migori County UDA Chairman Byron Ogiga condemned the incident strongly. “I condemn the act in the strongest terms possible, especially at a time when the Kuria community is lobbying for county status. Such actions risk undermining the development agenda the president is championing and could jeopardize future support,” he said.

The incident has since sparked widespread political discussion, with national leaders calling for calm and urging respect for the presidency, irrespective of political affiliation.

Public reaction has been swift and polarized. Many Kenyans online condemned the act as immature and disrespectful, arguing that such behaviour undermines the dignity of national leadership. Others raised concerns about the breach in presidential security, questioning how an object could be thrown so close to the head of state.

Some commentators linked the attack to growing public frustration over economic challenges and political grievances. However, many agreed that such expressions, regardless of motivation, should not cross into acts of aggression.
