Kapseret Member of Parliament, Hon. Oscar Sudi, has responded to ongoing public scrutiny regarding the luxurious fashion preferences of Kenyan politicians.

In a recent interview that has quickly gained traction online, the MP addressed the frequent criticisms aimed at leaders who are seen wearing high-end clothing, footwear, and accessories.

Hon. Sudi, known for his candid remarks, expressed disappointment over the fixation some members of the public have with the appearance and lifestyle choices of elected officials.

He firmly stated that such criticisms overlook the personal journeys and struggles many politicians have faced on their way to public office.

“People should not ask why I wear expensive shoes or a luxury watch,” Sudi remarked. “Instead, they should first take time to understand where I came from and how far I have come.”

During the interview, the MP was spotted wearing a pair of brown crocodile-skin penny loafers, which he revealed had cost him approximately KSh 70,000.

The interviewer, clearly intrigued, tried on one of the shoes and commented on its size. In return, Sudi attempted to try on the host’s shoes, cheekily describing them as “basic” by comparison.

The remarks have sparked a fresh round of debate on social media, with many weighing in on whether public figures should be judged for their spending habits—particularly when it involves personal items such as fashion.

This incident is reminiscent of an earlier controversy involving National Assembly Majority Leader Hon. Kimani Ichung’wah, who came under fire during a media appearance when keen-eyed viewers noted that he was wearing designer shoes with red soles—often associated with luxury brand Christian Louboutin.

While some online users criticized the perceived extravagance, a significant number rallied behind Hon. Sudi, arguing that personal success should not be a source of shame. Many cited his humble beginnings and viewed his fashion choices as a reflection of his journey rather than excess.

Social media platforms have since been flooded with reactions from users sharing mixed sentiments. One commenter stated, “Let Sudi wear what he wants. He has come from far.” Another added humorously, “I walked into a boutique, saw shoes worth 2,000 and left because they were too expensive. Now someone is talking about 70k shoes!”

Others expressed admiration for the MP’s realism and humility. “Sudi is my favourite politician by far because he came from a far place and deserves everything he owns today,” one user wrote. Another added, “Mtu roho safi… barikiwa sana mheshimiwa,” which translates to “A pure-hearted man… may you be blessed, Honourable.”

However, there were also voices of concern, with some suggesting that such expenditures could instead support essential needs like education. One user noted, “That 70,000 could pay school fees for two terms.” Another pointed out the importance of staying grounded: “Now should he stop wearing the shoes because that money could educate someone? Everyone should handle their own responsibilities.”

Despite the diverse opinions, what remains clear is that the public continues to be deeply invested in the lives and decisions of those in leadership. For many, Hon. Sudi’s remarks have not only shed light on his personal story but have also reignited a broader conversation about wealth, perception, and the expectations placed on public figures.

As the discussion continues online, Hon. Sudi maintains that his achievements are the product of hard work and perseverance. For him, fashion is not just a matter of taste—but a symbol of how far he has come.
