“One Term?” – Gachagua’s Faith Kipyegon Post Sparks Political Firestorm

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua sparked controversy on Thursday, June 26, after posting a cryptic congratulatory message to middle-distance runner Faith Kipyegon following her world record-breaking mile attempt. While hailing the athlete’s achievement, Gachagua seemed to take a subtle dig at President William Ruto, and the internet went wild.

Gachagua posted a photo of Kipyegon raising her index finger and smiling — a picture taken after her 1500m world record in Paris in 2024. The caption read: “Faith Kipyegon, we got you! That was a good and fast run.”

On the same day, June 26, Kipyegon attempted to become the first woman to run a mile in under four minutes during a Breaking4 event. She didn’t get sub-four but set a new world record of 4:06.42.

While the post was meant to celebrate Kipyegon’s achievement, the timing and symbolism caused controversy. Many Kenyans saw the raised index finger as a political statement. The gesture and caption led to speculation that Gachagua was referring to “Wantam” — a popular phrase among Ruto’s critics that means he will only serve one term.

Gachagua who has had a public fallout with Ruto and was later impeached by the Senate has not directly confirmed the meaning of the post. But the cryptic nature of the message sparked online debate.

Social media users reacted with humor and wit.

@WilsonNgasike commented: “Congratulations Faith! But if mchokozi was a person, then it’s you cousin.”

@AllanObare4 wrote: “Hata Faith Kipyegon anasema ni wantam ☝️”

Others like @imran_ke_, joked: “Everything reminds me of wantam
