The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has confirmed that the pilot phase for the deployment of digital cameras along major highways is still ongoing and remains within the planned six-month timeline.

Launched in November 2024, the pilot project saw the installation of digital cameras along key transport corridors, including the Thika Superhighway, Southern Bypass, and Mombasa Road. These installations aim to enhance road safety and enforce traffic regulations through technology.

Speaking before the National Assembly Committee on Transport, NTSA Director General George Njao appealed to Members of Parliament for financial support to ensure the project’s successful implementation. He emphasized that the next phase would involve the rollout of 408 additional enrollment kits to aid in updating driver records.

Mr. Njao noted that the kits would be particularly beneficial to Kenyans in the diaspora who are unable to return home easily.

“We have now completed six months of testing and are capturing data with accuracy,” he said. “The next step is to roll out the 408 enrollment kits.”

He further pointed out that while regulations are currently under review at the Attorney General’s chambers, the authority lacks the necessary budget to implement the project nationwide.

Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir echoed Mr. Njao’s remarks. He highlighted that the digital system, once fully operational, would enable authorities to identify and track traffic offenders more effectively.

“There are digital cameras already installed at select locations for testing,” said Mr. Chirchir. “We have gathered enough data and are now preparing to institutionalize the system and procure both fixed and mobile cameras to help improve road user behavior.”

Members of Parliament commended the ministry’s adoption of technology to address poor driving habits.

The digital system automatically captures a motorist’s speed on designated highways and instantly issues a ticket via mobile device, notifying the driver of any traffic infractions.
