Ngelani Residents in Mavoko Left Homeless Following Overnight Demolitions by Goons
Residents of Ngelani in Mavoko, Machakos County, are reeling from shock and devastation after unknown individuals allegedly ambushed them and demolished their homes in the middle of the night.
According to reports, the incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, April 12, leaving at least 20 families homeless. The affected residents have expressed deep disappointment and heartbreak over the incident.
Daudi Barasa, one of the residents, recounted the terrifying experience. He stated that the attackers arrived at around 1:00 a.m. while most families were asleep. The group, whose vehicles had concealed number plates, reportedly acted swiftly and violently, offering no warning or explanation.
“I believe there were police officers among them, but many wore civilian clothes. We couldn’t tell whether they were legitimate officers or hired goons—they were armed. We had not received any court order. They ambushed us in the night,” Barasa said.
He added that he had lived on the land for over seven years and that there were stay orders in place permitting them to remain on the property.
Another resident, Wangoi Waweru, whose home—valued in the millions—was also destroyed, described the situation as both tragic and unjust. “No one told us what was happening. We have been left homeless and are now left questioning who is behind this,” she said.
Waweru noted that when they visited the local police station, the Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD) claimed to be unaware of the operation. “There were more than 200 police officers here, but still, no one could explain what was going on. We were told the orders came from higher up.”
She voiced concern for the families with young children now left without shelter. “Where do we take them now? Where do we even sleep?”
Another resident alleged that some of the individuals involved took advantage of the chaos to loot personal belongings from the affected homes.
The distressed families reported the incident to the Athi River Police Station. However, they claim no action has been taken so far.
