A tragic conflict over land ownership has resulted in the deaths of five individuals in Angata Barikoi, Kilgoris, located in Narok County.

According to early reports, the fatal shooting, which occurred on Monday afternoon, was sparked by protests against the alleged illegal takeover of a 6,300-acre piece of land.

Witness accounts and media footage obtained by Independent.co.ke captured the chaotic scenes as gunfire erupted, forcing terrified residents to flee. Women’s cries and anguished shouts filled the air, with many accusing officers from the General Service Unit (GSU) of responsibility for the deadly confrontation.

Narok Senator Ledama Olekina promptly responded to the incident, voicing his alarm and deep sorrow. “I am deeply saddened by the reported news of the killings in Angata Barikoi. My heartfelt condolences to all affected. I want to assure you that no one can take your land from you,” he declared. In addition, the Senator vowed to visit the community soon to fully comprehend the situation on the ground. He reiterated his commitment by stating, “As your Senator, I stand firmly with you in this difficult time. I will visit the area soon to gain a better understanding of the situation and offer my support. Once again, my sincere condolences.”

Sources suggest that the disputed land may belong to a well-connected politician from the region. However, Independent.co.ke has not been able to independently verify the actual ownership of the property.

The issue is not new. Earlier in March, Angata Barikoi residents staged demonstrations over fears that the influential leader was attempting to seize their ancestral land.

This longstanding dispute had already heightened tensions within the community long before Monday’s tragedy.

Despite the seriousness of the events, by the time this report was published, neither the police nor local government officials had released formal statements explaining the circumstances that led to the confrontation and fatal shootings. The silence from authorities has only deepened residents’ frustrations and anxieties.

Senator Olekina, recognized for his unwavering stance on protecting communal land rights, pledged that he would not sit idly by while local communities were dispossessed.

His promise of action and solidarity has provided some measure of hope to grieving families and fearful residents alike.

As investigations continue, the people of Angata Barikoi await justice and clarity over a dispute that has now claimed innocent lives.

Transitioning from grief to advocacy, many residents are calling for a transparent inquiry and the safeguarding of their land from powerful interests.
