Nairobi MCAs Impeach Sakaja Plot Resurfaces as 55 Signatures Secured
The Nairobi MCAs impeach Sakaja push is back on the table, reigniting political tensions at City Hall just five months after a similar effort was shelved.
Members of the Nairobi County Assembly have revived plans to remove Johnson Sakaja from office, accusing him of mismanaging the county and sidelining elected ward representatives.
At the centre of the renewed storm is Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai, who now claims the numbers required to kickstart the impeachment process are within reach.
55 Signatures Already Collected
According to Alai, 55 MCAs have already appended their signatures to the motion, with 42 more needed to formally table it before the assembly.
“We already have 55 signatures. We need only 42 signatures to ensure that the motion is presented before the county assembly. think we have enough numbers. The threshold has already been hit. By next week, we will file the motion to remove the governor of Nairobi,” Alai said.
The bold declaration signals that City Hall could soon plunge into yet another high-stakes political battle.
MCAs Raise Alarm Over Ksh80 Billion Pact
A major sticking point is the controversial Ksh80 billion cooperation agreement signed between Nairobi County and the national government under William Ruto.
MCAs opposed to the deal argue that Sakaja effectively surrendered the county’s autonomy and independence to the national executive. They claim the pact undermines devolution by shifting critical functions and influence away from elected county leaders.
Beyond the deal, Sakaja is accused of “running down the county” and distancing himself from representatives of the people — claims that have fuelled dissatisfaction across political lines.
How Ruto and Raila Previously Blocked the Ouster
This is not the first time the Nairobi governor has faced an impeachment scare.
Five months ago, a similar motion was halted after intervention by President Ruto and the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
In September 2025, the two leaders convened separate meetings with their allied lawmakers. At State House, Ruto reportedly warned UDA-aligned MCAs against pursuing the motion, urging them to focus on development rather than political brinkmanship.
Meanwhile, Raila gathered ODM MPs and MCAs at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation in Nairobi. The meeting, chaired by veteran politician Fred Gumo, later included Sakaja himself.
Insiders indicated that the talks ended with consensus to abandon the impeachment push, describing it as a destabilising distraction for the capital.
Could the Motion Succeed This Time?
The re-emergence of the Sakaja impeachment motion suggests underlying tensions were never fully resolved.
Sources within the assembly indicate the earlier truce was conditional — and that failure to honour certain political commitments could trigger renewed action.
If formally tabled, the motion would mark one of the most consequential political battles in Nairobi’s recent history, with significant implications for governance, service delivery, and national-county relations.
For now, all eyes remain on whether the MCAs can secure the additional signatures needed to bring the matter to the assembly floor.
