Mp Charles Ong’ondo Last Post A Day to His Murder Breaks Kenyans’ Hearts

Mp Charles Ong’ondo Last Post A Day to His Murder Breaks Kenyans’ Hearts

A wave of sorrow has swept across the country following the brutal killing of Kasipul Member of Parliament, Charles Ong’ondo Were. While the nation reels from the shocking incident, it is his final social media post—shared just a day before his death—that has left many Kenyans heartbroken.

In the post, which now reads like a haunting farewell, Ong’ondo shared a video and photos from an event held in his constituency. He had attended the burial of Joel Abach, a longtime ally and grassroots leader who served as ODM’s Vice Chairperson at Katanga Polling Station. The MP’s tribute to Abach reflected a deep sense of gratitude and respect.

“Today, I attended the burial of my longtime supporter, Joel Abach, who served faithfully as the ODM Vice Chairperson at Katanga Polling Station. Joel was not only a strong pillar in our political journey but also a dedicated leader who believed deeply in the values and vision we champion,” he wrote. “His loyalty, wisdom, and tireless service will always be remembered and cherished by all who had the privilege to work alongside him.”

He concluded the post with a heartfelt message: “On behalf of my team and myself, I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the entire Katanga community. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”

Alongside the message, Ong’ondo posted a video showing himself leading mourners dressed in the signature orange of the ODM party. The group chanted party slogans with pride as they paid their respects. In a spirited declaration, the MP could be heard saying, “Largest party in East and Central Africa.” Another image showed him with arms lifted, flanked by cheering supporters—some wearing green Gor Mahia jerseys.

Just a day later, on the evening of Wednesday, April 30, tragedy struck.

According to witnesses, two men riding a motorcycle approached the MP’s vehicle near the City Mortuary roundabout in Nairobi shortly after 7:30pm. One of them dismounted and opened fire at close range, striking Ong’ondo fatally. The driver was not harmed, suggesting the hit was targeted. Bystanders say nearby traffic police may have witnessed the attack.

The MP was rushed to Nairobi Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

His death has sparked public outrage, confusion, and mourning. Online, Kenyans have flooded his final post with emotional messages, expressing disbelief at the senseless act and mourning a man they saw as a champion of the people.

Clifford Otieno wrote simply, “The reality of life.”
Mark Denvan questioned, “How did we get here? In a nation that prides itself on democracy and order, such brazen acts of violence against leaders leave us shaken. Are we truly safe anymore? Is this happening in Kenya?”
Dominic Were posted, “So sad.”
Joash Cushite asked, “Who has killed Charles Ong’ondo Were?”
Muliro Webi declared, “Rest in eternal peace. Those who killed you will find no peace.”

What makes the loss even more painful is the fact that the MP had previously voiced concerns about his safety. Just two months before his death, Ong’ondo warned of escalating unrest in his constituency. He pointed fingers at unknown individuals for inciting chaos, particularly after a funeral in Nyatindo East Kamagak ward was disrupted by hired goons.

He criticized local security officials for their silence and inaction, urging them to intervene before the situation worsened. His words now seem tragically prophetic.

The assassination of Charles Ong’ondo Were has reignited debate about political violence and public safety in Kenya. Many are questioning how a lawmaker, who had openly raised alarms about threats to his life, could still fall victim to such a brazen attack in the heart of the capital.

For now, investigations are ongoing, and police have yet to determine a clear motive or arrest any suspects. But what is certain is that Kenya has lost a vocal and passionate leader. His final post, shared with warmth and humility, stands as a painful reminder of the life and vision that was suddenly cut short.

As one commenter aptly put it, “He eulogized someone he respected, not knowing the country would be doing the same for him within 24 hours.”

The tragedy has left the nation not only grieving, but deeply reflective. Was this killing preventable? Could more have been done to protect him? While those answers may take time, one thing remains clear: Charles Ong’ondo’s legacy, especially through his final message, will not be forgotten.
