Missing Activist Ndiangui Kinyagia Found Alive After 10 Days in Hiding
Missing blogger and activist Ndiangui Kinyagia has been found alive and in hiding, according to his family lawyer Wahome Thuku.
Kinyagia had not been seen since Saturday June 21 and contacted a family member on Tuesday July 1 evening to confirm he is safe but in an undisclosed location due to fear for his life. This is over 10 days after he went missing.
According to Thuku, Kinyagia went into hiding after receiving information that DCI officers were after him for unspecified criminal allegations. He is willing to present himself in court but wants assurance of his safety and protection.
The statement was posted on Thuku’s official Facebook page on Thursday July 3 and further stated that Kinyagia was ready to appear in court the same day. DCI Director Mohammed Amin was also expected to appear before Justice Chacha Mwita at Milimani Law Courts alongside Kinyagia.
Kinyagia went missing after reports emerged that individuals believed to be DCI officers had raided his home in Kiambu County on the same day he went missing. This raised questions about the DCI’s role and civil society groups and human rights advocates are now mounting pressure.
The case has gone national with calls for transparency and protection of civil liberties. As of Thursday morning it’s not clear if Kinyagia has appeared in court or if arrangements for his safe surrender are in place.
Authorities have not responded to the lawyer’s claims or provided clarity on the allegations facing the activist.
