Malala Raises Alarm Over 15 Missing Butere Girls After Drama Festival Incident

Malala Raises Alarm Over 15 Missing Butere Girls After Drama Festival Incident

Former UDA Party Secretary General, Cleophas Malala, has raised an alarm over the disappearance of 15 students from Butere Girls High School.

Speaking on Thursday, April 10, Malala stated that he had received information indicating that the students went missing following chaos during the National Drama Festivals held in Nakuru County.

“I have just been informed that out of the Butere students who came, about fifteen of them are missing. I don’t know who took these children,” he said.

Malala urged both the police and teachers to take immediate action in locating the students and ensuring their safety. “I would like to ask the teachers and police officers who were responsible for protecting them to look for them, bring them back, and ensure they are safe,” he added.

In his address, the former Kakamega Senator also commended the Butere Girls students for their decision not to perform the play Echoes of War.

According to Malala, the students had taken a bold and patriotic stand. He expressed optimism that they would still be given an opportunity to perform before the conclusion of the festival.

“I am celebrating those children; they have become heroines in our country. They have done a patriotic act,” he stated. “We are going to ensure that we have used all means before this festival ends so that those children perform, because it is very important.”

Earlier that morning, the students had refused to take the stage, citing police harassment. They reportedly demanded the presence of Malala, who also serves as their director in the production.

Instead of performing, the students sang the national anthem and walked off the stage at Melvin Jones Lions Academy.

“We were harassed by the police; they took us to the stage with nothing. We sang our national anthem and said we are not going to perform,” one of the students said.

Their actions sparked chants of “Ruto Must Go” from a section of the audience. Video footage later captured supporters escorting the school’s bus away from the venue.
