Lang’ata MP Jalang’o Responds to Backlash Over “Witches” Remark After Kisii Tour
Lang’ata Member of Parliament Phelix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o, recently found himself at the center of controversy following a lighthearted remark he made during a visit to Kisii.
While addressing the significance of installing security lights in the region, Jalang’o humorously mentioned witnessing a gathering of witches who were reportedly displeased by the disruption of their night-time activities due to electricity.
This comment, intended to entertain, quickly spiraled into widespread online criticism. Many social media users accused him of reinforcing old stereotypes that have historically linked the Kisii community with witchcraft. Some expressed disappointment, arguing that such jokes only serve to revive harmful myths and foster negative perceptions.
Responding to the backlash, Jalang’o issued a heartfelt clarification. He insisted that his words were never intended to insult or demean the Kisii people. “I am deeply hurt by the way my words have been misrepresented,” Jalang’o said. “It pains me to hear that anyone would think I would ever insult or look down upon the Kisii community.”
He went on to stress that the Kisii are not just political allies but also personal friends, colleagues, and even family members.
Jalang’o urged Kenyans to watch the full video clip to understand the genuine context behind his remarks. He appealed for unity and warned against allowing misunderstandings to create unnecessary divisions.
“I would never allow profiling or disrespect to come from my mouth or my heart,” he added. “Please, I ask you to take a moment to watch the full clip and understand the true context.”
Following Jalang’o’s statement, several leaders came forward to support him. Among them was South Mugirango Member of Parliament Sylvanus Osoro, who dismissed the uproar as unnecessary and baseless. Osoro argued that the word “witch” is an English term and was not meant as an insult directed at the Kisii community.

“Japheth Nyakundi, continue to shed light on them through power connectivity until they are exposed. Let’s stop being petty! Jalang’o, when you visit me and notice them, make it public. There is no insult to the community,” Osoro said.
He further advised Jalang’o to ignore the wave of online criticism and remain focused on his charitable initiatives, particularly his contributions to the church and the broader community. Osoro emphasized that leaders should not be distracted by petty grievances but should instead concentrate on positive development efforts.
Indeed, the episode highlights the broader challenge public figures face when navigating humor and sensitive cultural subjects. Although many leaders often use humor to connect with audiences, jokes touching on ethnic stereotypes can easily backfire, especially in Kenya’s highly diverse and sometimes volatile social environment.
Importantly, the controversy also draws attention to the vital role that electricity and security infrastructure play in rural areas like Kisii. By pointing out the benefits of lighting up neighborhoods, Jalang’o intended to celebrate progress rather than insult tradition. Unfortunately, the delivery of the message became clouded by misinterpretation.
Moving forward, the incident serves as a reminder to both politicians and citizens alike: words, even when spoken in jest, must be chosen carefully. In a nation as richly diverse as Kenya, where every community carries deep-seated pride and history, leaders must ensure their humor uplifts rather than divides.
Despite the storm, Jalang’o’s consistent efforts to promote development and unity remain visible. His appeal to the public to seek context rather than rush to judgment reflects a commitment to fostering a more understanding and cohesive society.
Similarly, the support he received from colleagues like Osoro signals that not all political discourse needs to descend into hostility. Dialogue, empathy, and a willingness to clarify intentions are powerful tools in resolving misunderstandings.
In the end, as Kenya continues its journey toward inclusivity and development, moments like these provide important learning opportunities. They emphasize the need for sensitivity in public communication, respect for all communities, and the promotion of unity above all else.
As Jalang’o continues his service to Lang’ata and beyond, his recent experience underlines a key truth: public leadership demands not only vision and action but also humility and care in every word spoken.
