KEWOPA Demands Probe into Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo Remarks Against Senator Dullo
NAIROBI, Kenya, June 3 — The Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) has called for urgent investigations into Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo over allegedly defamatory and misogynistic remarks made against Senator Fatuma Dullo.
In a strongly worded statement released on Monday, June 2, KEWOPA urged the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) to immediately probe Governor Guyo for what they termed as inflammatory statements targeting the Isiolo Senator.
“KEWOPA stands in full solidarity with Senator Fatuma Dullo and calls upon the relevant institutions, including the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), to probe this matter and hold the governor accountable for his inflammatory and defamatory statements,” the association stated.
The parliamentary group condemned the Governor’s recent public remarks, describing them as “defamatory, misogynistic, and reflective of the persistent undercurrents of discrimination faced by women in leadership.” KEWOPA argued that such attacks amounted to character assassination and undermined not just Senator Dullo, but the dignity of all women leaders in the country.
The controversy stems from a recent public event where Governor Guyo reportedly criticized Senator Dullo’s scrutiny of county expenditure and operations. During his speech, Guyo allegedly referenced the Senator’s personal life in a disparaging manner, implying that she was romantically involved with a much younger man — a comment KEWOPA viewed as an act of intimidation and a personal attack intended to undermine her senatorial role.
KEWOPA noted that this was not the first instance of such behavior from the Isiolo Governor, alleging a pattern of verbal attacks against the Senator, often coinciding with her exercising oversight functions over county affairs.
“Attempts to discredit the Senate’s oversight mandate through gendered attacks are not just personal affronts, they are direct assaults and violations of constitutionalism, good governance, and the principle of checks and balances,” KEWOPA added.
The association emphasized that all elected leaders in Kenya are constitutionally mandated to uphold values of equality, respect, and inclusivity — key pillars in the country’s democratic and devolved governance structure.
In a broader call to action, KEWOPA appealed to leaders across the political spectrum to uphold the dignity and rights of all citizens regardless of gender.
“We further urge all leaders, across the political divide, to uphold the values of respect, dignity, and equality,” the statement concluded.
As calls for accountability intensify, attention now shifts to whether the DCI and NCIC will initiate formal investigations into Governor Guyo’s conduct. The development also renews focus on the treatment of women in political leadership and the need to safeguard constitutional principles from personal and gender-based attacks.
