Kenya Airways has made a significant move to recognize outstanding leadership within its ranks by naming one of its Boeing 737-800 aircraft after Caroline Ndonga. This tribute highlights her remarkable contributions and the vital role she plays as the station manager in Burundi.

The decision followed an online poll conducted by the airline, where Ndonga emerged as the top choice, surpassing other prominent contenders such as Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge. The announcement was shared via Kenya Airways’ official X (formerly Twitter) account, emphasizing the deep meaning behind this naming.

“Not just our Burundi Station Manager, but a force of resilience, safety, and unwavering leadership,” the airline posted. “Today, her name soars on the side of our newest B737, honoring a woman who keeps us grounded while helping us fly higher. Because some names deserve the skies.”

According to TUKO, Kenya Airways CEO Allan Kilavuka elaborated on the decision. “This isn’t just a name on a fuselage. It’s a story of impact. Caroline reminds us that true leadership is found in action, especially when no one is watching. Naming this aircraft after her is a tribute to that kind of integrity,” he said.

Caroline Ndonga’s career at Kenya Airways spans nearly two decades. She joined the airline in 2005 as a flight dispatcher. Her dedication and competence led to her promotion in 2009 to the role of load controller, a position she held until 2012. Her responsibilities included overseeing aircraft weight and balance, ensuring flight safety, and coordinating with various airport operations teams.

Her leadership potential became increasingly evident. In 2012, she was promoted to operations supervisor in Kisumu County. After successfully managing operations there, she was appointed as the station manager in Burundi, where she currently serves.

Ndonga’s academic background reflects a strong foundation in both technical and managerial disciplines. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Horticulture Science and a master’s degree in Business Administration with a specialization in Strategic Management. This blend of education and hands-on experience has empowered her to manage complex aviation logistics and lead operational teams effectively.

The aircraft named in her honor—a Boeing 737-800—was acquired by Kenya Airways in February 2025. It is part of a broader strategy by the airline to enhance its passenger service capacity within Africa and to international destinations. The 737-800 is a narrow-body jet designed for short- to medium-haul routes and manufactured by the American aerospace company Boeing.

Compared to the Embraer E-jets previously in use, the Boeing 737-800 offers significantly greater capacity. While the Embraer aircraft can accommodate up to 92 passengers, the 737-800 can carry as many as 160. This upgrade reflects the airline’s intention to optimize efficiency and meet increasing demand on key routes.

According to Kilavuka, the move to lease the 737-800 is part of a fleet modernization plan aimed at improving operational efficiency and reducing costs. “The transition to larger narrow-body aircraft helps us serve more passengers without compromising on service quality,” he explained.

The symbolic gesture of naming the aircraft after Caroline Ndonga serves not only as recognition of her achievements but also as an inspiration to others in the aviation industry. It reflects Kenya Airways’ commitment to acknowledging talent from within and celebrating the people who drive the company’s success behind the scenes.

Employees and supporters of the airline have lauded the decision, noting how rare it is for ground operations staff to receive such public recognition. In a sector often dominated by pilot accolades and front-facing roles, this honor shines a light on the vital work done by operations professionals.

Moreover, Ndonga’s story reinforces a broader message about leadership. It is a reminder that influence is not solely measured by visibility but by consistent action, integrity, and impact. Her journey from dispatcher to station manager underscores the importance of perseverance and professional growth.

This initiative by Kenya Airways also aligns with growing efforts within the aviation industry to elevate and support women in leadership positions. By celebrating Ndonga’s career and accomplishments, the airline sets a strong example for inclusive recognition and representation.

As her name now adorns the fuselage of one of Kenya Airways’ most important aircraft, Caroline Ndonga becomes a symbol of dedication, competence, and the potential for career growth within the aviation field. Her legacy will fly with every takeoff and landing, serving as a beacon of excellence for those on the ground and in the air.
