Kakamega Pastor Attacked at Funeral for Standing on Grave and Cursing Family
Chaos and disbelief engulfed Luandeti after mourners clashed with a clergyman during a burial ceremony, bringing the solemn event to a dramatic and unexpected standstill.
Tensions flared when mourners accused the pastor of blatantly disregarding sacred cultural burial rites.
According to witnesses, the situation spiraled out of control after the clergyman allegedly barred Joseph Wafula, the grieving father of the deceased, from delivering a final tribute to his son.
In an emotional interview with TV47, Wafula recounted the devastating moment. He stated that the pastor had instead given speaking rights to a widowed woman, a move that he said was a direct violation of their deeply respected traditions.
“In our culture, a parent must speak before an in-law. I disagreed, but the pastor insisted that the widow speak first. That is when the mourners rejected it, saying it was against our cultural norms,” Wafula explained, his voice heavy with grief and frustration.
Witnesses described the atmosphere as one of growing outrage. One mourner declared that the pastor had lost all legitimacy in the eyes of the community by failing to honor the customs they hold sacred.
Shockingly, the situation deteriorated even further. According to multiple accounts, the pastor, sensing the hostility from the crowd, responded in an alarming manner—by standing atop the grave and hurling curses at the mourning family.

“The pastor stood on the grave and began cursing the family members. He did that for a while,” a female mourner revealed, her voice still shaken by the experience. “That is when the family members declared that it was not necessary to involve the church in the burial ceremony anymore.”
Eyewitnesses claimed that the pastor’s shocking behavior was not unprecedented. One mourner alleged that this was not the first time the clergyman had caused disruption and distress at a funeral.
“This is not the first time this pastor has done such an act at people’s funerals. He has done that several times. We didn’t want his dictatorship here. That is why we dealt with him,” another mourner asserted firmly.
As emotions boiled over, the mourners confronted the pastor and forcibly ejected him from the ceremony. Calm was only restored after his removal.
Ultimately, the bereaved family made the painful decision to proceed with the burial without any further involvement from the church, choosing instead to honour their cultural traditions in the face of deep sorrow and unexpected turmoil.
