KAA Breaks Silence on Kisumu International Airport Security After Sifuna’s Goons Allegations

The Kisumu International Airport security debate took center stage on Saturday, February 21, after claims emerged alleging the presence of armed individuals at the airport. The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has now firmly refuted those allegations, maintaining that airport operations remained secure and uninterrupted throughout the day.

The controversy erupted following remarks by Edwin Sifuna, who claimed his team was forced to re-route during the Linda Wananchi tour due to the alleged presence of armed goons at the airport.

KAA Dismisses Claims of Armed Goons

In an official statement, KAA described the claims circulating from sections of the Linda Wananchi tour organisers as inaccurate. The authority stressed that airport security protocols were fully operational and uncompromised.

“KAA wishes to clarify that at no time were unauthorised individuals, groups or organised unlawful elements present within the airport premises,” a statement from the airport authority said.

The agency emphasized that the airport remained extremely secure in line with established aviation protocols and national security regulations.

Sifuna Raises Alarm Over Airport Safety

The dispute gained momentum after Senator Sifuna took to social media, alleging that armed individuals had barricaded the airport. He further questioned whether the airport could still guarantee passenger safety.

“We need to hear from KAA whether Kisumu is still an International Airport and whether they can still guarantee the safety of all passengers transiting through there. How they allowed goons to barricade the airport needs to be explained,” Sifuna stated.

The images shared online showed several individuals in what appeared to be an airport runway, fueling speculation and political tension.

Images Circulated Were Outside Airport Jurisdiction

In response, KAA clarified that the images circulating online were not taken inside the airport premises. According to the authority, the individuals captured were outside the airport’s security perimeter.

The statement went on, “KAA further notes that images circulating online was outside the airport perimeter and beyond KAA’s security jurisdiction.”

KAA further explained that the Airport Security Committee and the Border Management Committee (BMC) worked jointly with other security agencies to maintain full operational control during the period in question.

Airport Operations Remained Normal

Despite the controversy, the authority assured travelers that airport services were not disrupted. Flights operated as scheduled, and no security breach was recorded.

KAA reiterated that there was no disturbance or compromise to passenger safety, aircraft operations, or airport infrastructure.

“We remain committed to upholding the highest standards of aviation security, safety, and operational integrity in accordance with national regulations and international aviation standards,” the statement added.

The authority reassured passengers that their safety remained its top priority and urged the public to rely on verified information when assessing airport security matters.

As political tensions continue to play out, KAA’s firm stance seeks to restore confidence in the safety and operational integrity of Kisumu International Airport.
