- In Kericho, a 9-year-old boy hacked to death by a tea picking machine.
A 9-year-old boy was hacked to death by an independent tea picker at the Cheptabes tea plantation in Kericho County.
Dickson Sang, secretary of the Kenya Plantation and Farm Workers Unit (KPAWU), says the boy was playing near the car picking tea on the farm of the James Finlace Tea Company.
Sang said the boy was curious and wanted to know how the machine worked.
He says he went to the tea bushes where the car was passing to see how the tea knives work.
His head was cut off before the machine threw his body almost 100 meters.
Sang, details that the warden saw the cloth around the blade and when he checked it, found it to be the body of a boy.
He accused the company of using the machinery on the farm without risk assessment and was concerned that the company would continue to operate normally after the accident.
The secretary claims that since the introduction of the machine, there have been many accidents requiring urgent investigation.
In a media statement, James Finlay’s company said it was sorry for the incident and would stand by the family, the community at large and its employees.
They said they were cooperating with law enforcement and launched an investigation to check the operation of their self-propelled harvester and determine how the incident occurred.
The victim’s body was taken to the mortuary of the Kericho Regional Hospital.
