IG Kanja Announces Changes in Police Recruitment, Adopts Technology to Eliminate Fraud

IG Kanja Announces Changes in Police Recruitment, Adopts Technology to Eliminate Fraud

The National Police Service (NPS) has announced significant changes to its recruitment process, with all future enlistments to be conducted online. This shift aims to address long-standing issues of fraud and inefficiency associated with the traditional manual recruitment methods.

On May 9, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja explained that the move to an online system is a critical step in eliminating the loopholes that have often been exploited during past recruitment drives. He emphasized that the overwhelming number of applicants has led to numerous cases of fraud, and this change will use technology to close these gaps.

This announcement follows a similar statement made by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen in early March.

Speaking at the General Service Unit (GSU) Headquarters, Murkomen revealed that the government had been in discussions with the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) regarding the integration of technology to enhance transparency in police recruitment. He assured the public that the technology deployed would prevent fraudsters from exploiting applicants by offering fake recruitment slots for sale.

Murkomen also reiterated that the aim of these reforms was to ensure a more transparent and equitable recruitment process. He stressed that the new approach would protect citizens from exploitation and foster trust in the recruitment system. “It will also ensure that no one is conned, and all citizens can observe a more transparent exercise,” he stated.

The automation of the recruitment process was a key recommendation from the taskforce led by former Chief Justice David Maraga.

According to the taskforce report, automation is essential to combat malpractices and promote greater competence, accountability, and integrity in the recruitment process. The report suggests that the first step should involve online applications for the advertised positions, followed by personal interviews at designated recruitment centers.

These reforms mark a pivotal moment in the modernization of the NPS recruitment process, ensuring greater transparency and fairness in selecting qualified candidates for police service.

The online system will serve as a safeguard against fraudulent activities and ensure that only the most qualified individuals are selected.
