Government Warns of Possible Falling Space Object During Easter

Government Warns of Possible Falling Space Object During Easter

The government, through the Kenya Space Agency (KSA), has issued a caution to the public regarding the potential re-entry of an unidentified object from space.

In a statement released on Friday, April 18, the Agency highlighted the importance of this event to Kenya, given that the projected flight trajectory of the object passes over the eastern African region.

The KSA specified that the object could potentially fall within Kenya, with the trajectory extending from the North Eastern region to the South East, near Tanzania and possibly further southward. This has raised concerns, and the public has been urged to remain vigilant.

The Agency has provided a time window for the potential re-entry, predicting the object’s fall between Saturday, April 19, at approximately 7:29 am, and Sunday, April 20, at around 3:01 pm.

While the object’s exact landing site remains uncertain, its significant size and unknown weight could pose a serious risk to lives and property along its path.

In response to these concerns, the KSA has been working alongside various partners to refine the predictions concerning the object’s flight path and timeline. Although the debris is not expected to land in Kenya, the Agency has advised the public to remain alert and report any falling debris or unusual activity in the sky during the specified period.

Should any debris be found, the public is urged to immediately notify security agencies through the nearest police station, national government office, or military camp to facilitate the necessary response.

This warning follows a similar incident on December 30, 2024, when a large piece of space debris weighing 500 kilograms fell in Makuku Village, Makueni County.

Villagers reported hearing a loud bang as the object descended, prompting a gathering of locals who speculated about its origin and the potential dangers to their safety.

Subsequent investigations by the Kenya Space Agency and officials from the National Police Service (NPS) confirmed that the object was part of a space rocket’s separation module. KSA noted that such debris typically burns up upon re-entry but may occasionally survive to the ground.

The Kenya Space Agency continues to monitor the situation closely, prioritizing public safety and urging continued vigilance.
