Gachagua Teases Anti-Ruto Alliance with Kalonzo, Wamalwa & Matiang’i
On Tuesday, April 15, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua announced that discussions are underway to form a political alliance aimed at unseating President William Ruto in the upcoming 2027 General Elections.
Speaking during the burial ceremony of Reverend Joseph Nzola in Machakos County, Gachagua disclosed that he is in talks with Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, DAP-K Leader Eugene Wamalwa, and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya.
According to Gachagua, the group is responding to a national call for unity in leadership. “We have listened to Kenyans who have asked us to come together and form a government that will move the country forward,” he stated. “We are doing exactly that. Together with Kalonzo, Eugene, and Matiang’i, we are already in the kitchen cooking it up.”
He further emphasized the significance of Kalonzo Musyoka’s role in the alliance, particularly to the people of Ukambani, assuring them that Kalonzo is a central figure in the emerging coalition.
At the same event, Gachagua warned of attempts to divide the opposition before the elections. He noted that any announcements regarding their preferred presidential candidate would be withheld until late 2026. “They are trying to tear us apart early, but we are not foolish. We will remain united and keep our plans to ourselves until December 2026,” he declared.
Since leaving office, Gachagua has become an outspoken critic of President Ruto’s administration, vowing to limit his presidency to one term. However, his efforts have not been without challenges, including reported disruptions and incidents involving damage to his convoy during public engagements.
Gachagua’s alignment with key opposition figures such as Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, and Martha Karua signals a shift in political alliances, especially after their respective fallouts with long-time opposition leader Raila Odinga.
Meanwhile, Fred Matiang’i, a prominent figure in former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration, has been officially endorsed by the Jubilee Party as its presidential flagbearer for 2027.

Despite expressing reservations about coalition-building, Jubilee Party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni acknowledged the shared objective among opposition leaders. “These alliances are prone to infiltration and breakdowns,” he cautioned, “but we all agree that our common opponent is President Ruto.”
President Ruto, on his part, has dismissed suggestions that he is at risk of losing re-election. He remains confident in his leadership and insists he is fully prepared to defend his position and secure a second term in office.
