Gachagua Receives Heroic Welcome in Nyandarua at First Church Appearance Since Mwiki Attack
Sunday, April 27, brought a festive atmosphere to Ol Jorok, Nyandarua County, as residents turned out in large numbers to welcome former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
The mood was electric, with ululations, songs, and spirited dancing filling the air as the community gathered to receive their leader.
Women and young people led the celebrations, waving flags and singing as they accompanied Gachagua’s motorcade towards Boiman Ol Joro-Orok Catholic Church. In videos widely circulated online, women could be heard singing songs of praise while dancing exuberantly alongside the politician.
It was not just a simple show of support; it was a heartfelt reunion. Smiling faces, traditional songs, and chants created an emotional scene, highlighting the strong bond between Gachagua and the people of Nyandarua.
As Gachagua’s convoy advanced, the enthusiastic crowd became so overwhelming that his motorcade was forced to stop. Residents insisted that he walk with them rather than drive. Responding warmly to their request, Gachagua stepped out of his car and joined the procession on foot.
He walked nearly half a kilometre alongside his supporters, exchanging greetings, shaking hands, and occasionally joining in the singing. The scene reflected a deep-rooted connection that extended beyond political allegiance to genuine personal admiration.

Such moments, especially following months of political turbulence, seemed to reaffirm Gachagua’s enduring popularity in the Mt. Kenya region.
This public appearance carried special significance as it was Gachagua’s first major outing since the troubling events at PCEA Mwiki Church earlier in April. During that incident, violence erupted, raising serious concerns over the safety of political leaders.
In the days following the attack, Gachagua addressed these fears directly. In a strongly worded letter to the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, he declared, “My life is in danger,” alleging that his political meetings and church gatherings were being targeted.
He pointed to a worrying pattern of attacks in Kiambu, Naivasha, and other parts of the country, claiming that his security had been compromised. His supporters have echoed these concerns, calling for enhanced protection for leaders who have fallen out with the current government.
Despite facing security threats and political challenges, Gachagua has not retreated from the public stage. After participating in the Sunday service at Boiman Ol Joro-Orok Catholic Church, he was scheduled to give a live interview later that evening on Weru Television, a Mt. Kenya-based station.
He invited the public to tune in, posting on his official X account:
“On Sunday, 27th April 2025, we discuss matters of our Nation, our future, and our progress as a people and as Kenyans. Join me on Weru Television for a candid and truthful conversation.”
This interview was significant, marking his second media appearance in the month of April. Earlier, during an interview on KTN, Gachagua had made a series of allegations against the government, criticizing what he described as a betrayal of democratic ideals.
Through these media engagements, Gachagua has aimed to maintain his political relevance and defend his vision for the country, despite no longer holding the position of Deputy President.
Nyandarua County has remained a key pillar of support for Gachagua. It is one of several counties in the larger Mt. Kenya region where his influence continues to run deep. Political analysts observe that while he may have been ousted from the national executive, his grassroots connections remain largely intact.
Senator John Methu, a prominent figure from Nyandarua, has been among Gachagua’s most loyal allies. Methu and other regional leaders have often spoken out strongly in defense of Gachagua, underscoring their commitment to his political cause.
Locals view Gachagua not just as a political leader, but as one of their own—a man who understands their daily struggles and advocates for their needs.
Many observers believe that Sunday’s events in Ol Jorok could signal the beginning of a political resurgence for Gachagua. His ability to draw crowds, connect emotionally with citizens, and keep national conversations alive through media appearances suggests he is laying the groundwork for a larger political comeback.
Although he has not officially declared his future ambitions, his recent actions hint at a long-term strategy. Whether through grassroots mobilization, regional leadership, or national dialogue, Gachagua appears determined to remain an influential figure in Kenyan politics.
Time will tell how far this renewed momentum will carry him. For now, however, the people of Nyandarua have made one thing clear: their loyalty to Rigathi Gachagua remains steadfast.
