Fred Matiang’i Touches Down at JKIA, Set to Address the Nation Amid 2027 Speculation
Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has returned to Kenya from the United States, amid growing speculation about his possible bid for the presidency in the 2027 General Elections.
Dr. Matiang’i arrived at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) at 11:40 p.m. on Thursday, April 17. He flew in aboard a Qatar Airways flight from Washington, with a stopover in Doha.
Upon arrival, Dr. Matiang’i did not address the press. However, he briefly expressed gratitude for a safe journey, noting off-record that he would address the nation at a later date.
He was received by a delegation of leaders, including Jubilee Party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni, Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, and nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba, among others.
His return comes at a time when speculation about his political ambitions has gained momentum. Discussions around his potential candidacy began in earnest during the Gen Z-led protests on June 25, 2024, and have remained a topic of public interest.
Throughout the speculation, Dr. Matiang’i has remained reserved, offering no official confirmation of his intentions. Nevertheless, the Jubilee Party has been vocal in its support for his potential candidacy.
In February, Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni declared the party’s backing, stating:
“We’ve settled on Matiang’i as our candidate. Not to mean that he becomes the eventual presidential candidate, but a presidential candidate within the party—who would then join others to select a single flagbearer for the coalition.”
Several leaders from the Kisii region, including Senator Onyonka, have also publicly endorsed him.
The debate over his presidential aspirations has extended to social media, where it continues to generate both support and opposition in equal measure.
Further fueling speculation are reports of his recent engagement with Canadian lobby firm Dickens & Madison. The firm is said to be helping strategize his campaign ahead of the 2027 elections.
Dr. Matiang’i has most recently been employed by the World Bank in Washington, D.C., focusing on Latin American projects. However, insiders suggest he may be preparing to step down from his role to re-enter Kenya’s political arena.
“Yesterday, Dr. Fred Matiang’i called me from where he is working for the World Bank in Latin America. He has decided to leave the job and come back to Kenya to join our brothers,” Senator Onyonka revealed in January.
As the 2027 elections approach, Dr. Matiang’i’s next steps will be closely watched by both supporters and political observers across the country.
