Five Injured After DCI Officer’s Gun Accidentally Discharges at Bungoma Law Courts
Two officers and three civilians were injured after a DCI officer’s firearm went off during a court session in Bungoma.
A tense moment unfolded at the Bungoma Law Courts after a Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officer’s gun accidentally discharged live rounds, leaving five people injured.
Judiciary Spokesperson Paul Ndemo confirmed the incident, noting that two officers — the DCI officer himself and a Kenya Prisons officer — alongside three civilians, sustained injuries during the mishap.
“At 10:50am, during the hearing of a criminal matter in the High Court, a DCI officer’s firearm accidentally discharged a bullet, injuring him, a Kenya Prison’s Officer, and three civilians,” Ndemo said.
The injured victims were rushed to Bungoma Referral Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment. According to Ndemo, none of the injuries were life-threatening, and all five individuals remain in stable condition.
Ndemo reassured the public that court officials and other members of the public present during the hearing were unharmed.
“All court officials as well as members of the public at the Court are safe, and there is therefore no need for alarm,” he added.
Following the incident, Bungoma County Police Commander Anderson Njagi confirmed that a security team had been dispatched to assess the situation and initiate investigations to establish the exact circumstances that led to the accidental discharge.
Njagi further assured that security agencies in the county are committed to preventing similar incidents in the future.
“We want to reassure the judiciary of their safety and cooperation in this matter, and we are going to do everything possible to ensure that this kind of incident does not occur again,” he stated.
In a statement, the DCI also indicated that necessary measures will be taken to ensure accountability and to address any potential security lapses exposed by the incident.
The Judiciary has pledged to keep the public updated as investigations continue.
