Edwin Sifuna Dismisses Uhuru Backing Claims as Linda Mwananchi Movement Eyes 2027 Showdown

Embattled Edwin Sifuna has firmly dismissed claims that he is receiving political backing from former president Uhuru Kenyatta to mobilise support for the Linda Mwananchi tours spearheaded by his faction within Orange Democratic Movement.

Speaking during an interview on NTV on Tuesday morning, the Nairobi senator sought to put to rest online speculation linking his political activities to the former head of state. He described the allegations as unfounded and insisted he has not engaged in any political consultations with Kenyatta.

The outspoken lawmaker clarified that assumptions placing him within the broader Azimio la Umoja leadership structure were misplaced. According to him, his mandate remains strictly within ODM and the Linda Mwananchi initiative.

”No, I have not had a conversation with him (Uhuru Kenyatta). People expected that because Sifuna is the SG of ODM, he is automatically a member of the council of Azimio. So I do not have information on what is happening in Azimio. You can only ask me questions about what is happening in ODM and Linda Mwananchi,” Sifuna said.

Linda Mwananchi Funding: Grassroots Support, Not State House Networks

Addressing persistent rumours that the Linda Mwananchi tours were bankrolled by Kenyatta’s political network, Sifuna maintained that the movement has largely thrived on public goodwill and voluntary contributions.

He emphasized transparency, promising that a detailed financial breakdown of past campaign expenses would be made available.

”We will give you a breakdown of our expenses in our past campaigns, and before that, we can tell you that we have been largely relying on goodwill and support from the common mwananchi, which we are very happy about,” he added.

His remarks appear aimed at countering narratives suggesting hidden sponsorship or elite political financing. Instead, Sifuna framed the movement as a citizen-driven effort built from the grassroots level.

2027 Presidential Strategy: Structured Process to Challenge Ruto

Looking ahead to the 2027 General Election, Sifuna made it clear that the primary objective of the Linda Mwananchi caucus is to build a formidable opposition bloc capable of taking on President William Ruto.

He stressed that selecting a presidential flagbearer would not be a rushed or personality-driven affair. Instead, he called for a structured, data-informed process rooted in empirical political analysis.

”The issue of settling on the leader and who will lead us against Ruto must be a structured process. We will look at how many votes we can command from our followers. We have a duty of a lifetime to rescue our country, and this should therefore not be about Sifuna,” he said.

In a notable departure from traditional opposition politics, Sifuna argued for the cultivation of multiple strong contenders rather than rallying around a single dominant figure early on.

”I want us to grow this movement to a point that there are like 10 viable candidates for the presidency so that if they somehow go for one, nine others can be able to vie for the presidency,” he said.

“Beat Ruto by 5 Million Votes”

Sifuna did not mince his words when discussing the scale of victory he believes is necessary to signal public dissatisfaction with the current administration.

”We must beat William Ruto by at least 5 million votes to make it clear that we are tired of his administration. We must be one force against William Ruto,” he said.

The senator’s remarks underline an aggressive electoral strategy designed not merely to edge out a win, but to secure a commanding mandate.

Cooperation with United Opposition?

On possible alliances with other opposition formations, including the broader United Opposition, Sifuna downplayed the urgency of immediate alignment. He suggested that strategic clarity and internal consolidation should precede any formal coalition-building efforts.

His position signals a cautious approach — one that prioritizes strengthening the Linda Mwananchi movement before entering broader political arrangements.

Why This Matters for 2027 Politics

Sifuna’s latest remarks offer insight into the evolving dynamics within ODM and the wider opposition space. As political alignments begin to shift ahead of 2027, questions about funding, leadership structure, and coalition strategy are likely to intensify.

By distancing himself from Kenyatta and emphasizing grassroots mobilisation, Sifuna appears keen to project independence and internal legitimacy within his faction.

Whether the Linda Mwananchi movement can transform its rhetoric into electoral momentum remains to be seen — but one thing is clear: the battle lines for 2027 are already being drawn.
