Didmus Barasa Opens Up on the Meaning of His Trademark Red Hat

Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa has lifted the lid on the origins and symbolism of his trademark red cylindrical hat, a fashion piece that has become inseparable from his political identity.

Barasa, widely recognized for donning the flat-top fez-style cap both in Parliament and at political rallies, clarified that the accessory is more than a style choice. Speaking during a recent event in Bungoma, he said the headgear carries cultural and personal significance.

According to the legislator, the hat is the handiwork of Ghanaian fashion enthusiast Paulina George, who is married to a Kenyan and has long been involved in creating distinctive designs.

“Paulina George is the one who designed the famous headgear for the late Orie Rogo Manduli. She also makes mine. There is nothing complicated about the cap—it is simply beautiful and unique,” Barasa explained.

The MP added that his red hat holds a special place in Kenya’s political history, claiming it is the only one officially permitted inside the National Assembly.

“I am the only person allowed to wear this hat in Parliament. It has parliamentary recognition, and that makes me feel special,” he said.

Barasa also urged Kenyans who have adopted his style to uphold good morals while wearing the distinctive accessory.

“I have seen many Kenyans wearing this hat. Please, if you wear it, you must be well behaved. And if you have not given your life to Jesus Christ, I urge you to do so. Otherwise, don’t wear it,” he stated.

The lawmaker’s strong attachment to the cap has been evident in past events. During the Kibra by-election in November 2019, he lost it in a confrontation with ODM supporters. He later pleaded publicly for its return, with Suna East MP Junet Mohamed claiming to have recovered it.

In April 2023, his right to wear the hat inside Parliament was challenged by Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo, sparking debate over its place in the chambers.

For Barasa, however, the red hat remains both a personal emblem and a political signature, symbolizing identity, uniqueness, and faith.
