Two gunmen who terrorized residents of the five counties of Wasin-Gishu, Trans-Nzoya, Bungoma, Kakamega and Vihiga were seriously injured in a shootout with detectives tonight, DCI reports.
Two men who killed three innocent civilians and wounded several more were killed in a firefight between detectives from the headquarters operations department and seized AK-47 assault rifles with 19 special-loading 7.62-mm rounds.
This came after gunmen traveling from Mumias to Eldoret on motorcycles opened fire on the officers against surrender orders, prompting undercover investigators to respond to the provocation with heavy fire and they were killed on the spot.
The unidentified thugs were part of a five-man gang that carried out eight armed attacks in five locations between October 22 and December 26, all of which targeted shops, supermarkets and wholesalers in Mpesa, costing them millions of shillings.
According to a report from the DCI National Forensic Laboratory’s Forensics Division, each attack was linked to a single firearm, which sent teams of experienced detectives to five police departments to hunt down the thief.
