Climax Bus Driver Speaks After Fatal Collision Claims Cyrus Jirongo’s Life

Fresh details have emerged following the fatal road accident that claimed the life of former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Jirongo died on December 13 after his vehicle was involved in a head-on collision with a Climax Coach bus along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway in Naivasha. Police have since confirmed that the former legislator was driving himself at the time of the accident.

Speaking after the incident, Naivasha DCIO Isaac Kiama said the crash occurred at around 3:00am as Jirongo was travelling from Nakuru towards Nairobi. According to preliminary police findings, the accident happened in the Karai area when Jirongo attempted to overtake several vehicles.

“Initial investigations indicate that the deceased was driving a Mercedes Benz registration number KCZ 305C and attempted to overtake multiple vehicles before colliding head-on with an oncoming bus,” Kiama stated.

The oncoming vehicle was a Climax Company bus that was heading in the opposite direction. Jirongo reportedly sustained severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the bus, identified as Tiras Kamau Githinji, has since given his account of the events leading up to the crash. Speaking to TV47 reporter Willy Dennis Njiru, Githinji said the accident could have been avoided had Jirongo slowed down and given way to the vehicles he was overtaking.

“I saw the vehicle overtaking several cars, but there was nowhere for me to escape,” Githinji said. “The bus was fully occupied, and I had no option. The collision happened suddenly.”

The 52-year-old driver revealed that the bus was carrying 65 passengers at the time of the accident, all seated to full capacity. While several passengers sustained injuries, authorities are yet to release a comprehensive report on their condition.

Following the crash, Jirongo’s body was taken to Naivasha Sub-County Hospital mortuary before being transferred to Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi. Investigations into the incident are ongoing as police work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.

Jirongo, a prominent businessman and politician, previously served as Lugari MP and remained an influential figure in Kenya’s political and corporate circles until his death.
